Sturgis VFD was dispatched on 5/13/26 to a large fire. Upon arrival, fire units were met with a large pole barn on fire with multiple exposures (structures, vehicles, equipment). The area contained a very large amount of different sized propane tanks and other pressurized cylinders that were exploding under pressure from the fire that caused multiple grassfires in the surrounding area from flying debris. Fire attack was difficult due to the hazards presented to all of the units due to the pressurized tanks exploding. The fire was extinguished and multiple buildings were saved.

Sturgis VFD responded to the Gravel Rd fire on Thursday. We were fortunate enough to be able to contain this fire relatively quickly given the wind conditions. Thanks to Vale Fire Department, Whitewood Volunteer Fire Department, Ft Meade Fire Department, South Dakota State Wildland, Meade County Sheriff's Office, South Dakote Game and Fish, and some of our nearby locals for all their help!

Sturgis VFD responded to the Granite Fire last night in Boulder Canyon where we fought a wildland fire in steep terrain with heavy winds. Thanks to Deadwood VFD, Ft Meade FD, Vale VFD, Whitewood VFD, SD Wildland, and USFS for all the help. We all were able to knock this fire out quickly and keep it to 1.2 acres.

Today we pause to remember a heartbreaking day in our department’s history. Seven years ago, Assistant Chief David Fischer gave the ultimate sacrifice while battling a fire in the Tilford community.

David was not only a dedicated firefighter, but also a beloved member of Sturgis Ambulance and Emergency Services, and a true friend to so many of us. His courage, commitment, and selflessness continue to inspire our department and community every day.

We honor his memory, his service, and his legacy. David will never be forgotten.

Attention Sturgis Motorcycle Rally Visitors!

We’ve been getting a lot of calls asking if there’s a burn ban in place. The answer is YES — the fire ban is in effect from July 19 to August 17, 2025, in Meade County. No open burning allowed during this time.

Please do NOT call 911 to ask about the legality of your campfire.

However, if your camper is on fire or there’s an actual emergency, then yes, call 911 immediately.

The recent rains have everything looking nice and green, but it has also produced a great deal of fuel. If one of these fires gets up and moving it's not going to be a great day.
