L.H. Barkhausen Waterfowl Preserve A Brown County Park with 1000 acres to explore, Nature Center, and outdoor programs for all ages. Over nine miles of mowed hiking trails await you.

A place where prehistoric Indian tribes once hunted, fished, and camped and today this natural area is home and refuge for a wide variety of wildlife, waterfowl, and plant species. Outdoor education sessions, family nature programs, Scout programs, and Naturalist-led walks are available through the West Shores Interpretive Center on a year-round basis. Come join us for our fall public bird hikes. Hikes are free and registration is not required. Hikes begin at the Fort Howard parking lot off Lineville Road and will be 1-2 miles on even, accessible trails. It is recommended to bring your own binoculars, but a limited supply will be available to borrow.

Barkhausen Waterfowl Preserve and Fort Howard Paper Foundation Wildlife Area will again be open for the 9-day gun-deer season in 2026 BY PERMIT ONLY. A limited number of permits are available which will be issued by random drawing. Applicants may register for the drawing as an individual, or as a group (no more than 3 people per group). Please note that applicants may not register for the drawing in both categories.
Registration for the drawing will take place between AUGUST 1-15, 2024, by calling Barkhausen at (920) 434-2824. Names for the drawing will be taken only during that time frame.

The Green Bay Duck Hunter's Association annual Youth Waterfowl Day is coming up on Saturday August 8th from 9am-1pm. This FREE event introduces various aspects of duck hunting with interactive stations led by experienced mentors from the area. Lunch is included along with a free hat, t-shirt and duck calls! The 2026 Duck Rescue season is wrapping up with the dedicated volunteers rescuing 661 ducks! The ducks came from storm drains, pools, roof tops, highways, courtyards, and more places that aren't the best for them but the volunteers were ready to step in to get them out and to a safe wetland. In some cases it was a learning opportunity and a positive experience for residents where the ducks were rescued. This program wouldn't be possible without the commitment of those individuals as well as those who reached out to get help for the ducks and ducklings. A big thank you to all those who volunteered, called in, and helped out!

Wildlife Wednesday post! Barkhausen Waterfowl Preserve is a great place to take a quiet walk to connect with nature and look for wildlife. Through the years, over 230 species of birds have been documented at the park! The other day staff observed a rare species for this area, the Acadian Flycatcher. They heard its notable "Pi-zza!" call. This is a southern flycatcher that has only been documented in Brown County a few times. This year also hosted a prairie warbler, only 2nd ever Brown County record. This shows how important Barkhausen's impact is on wildlife!

You may notice a few changes at the nature center when you visit. Please excuse the mess and changes as we have begun the preparation for our nature center update and remodel! You are still welcome to explore the discovery room and visit the nature center animals. We are excited to get this project started and are even more excited for everyone to see the new displays and exhibits by the end of the year! Watch for updates along the way!
