Today we saw our first goslings of the year! Several families were seen near the Nature Center. When visiting please give them some space and don’t feed them. Duck Rescue also had its first ducklings picked up and transported to a wetland safely away from the city. Baby critter season is here!

A goose here at Barkhausen made it's nest in the right spot as, while the water got close, it is staying dry with all this flooding! Speaking of geese, let's talk about ducks. The Duck Rescue Program, started by members of the Green Bay Duck Hunters Association working with the Bay Beach Wildlife Sanctuary, is now starting it's 41st year! Dedicated volunteers will again be ready to rescue ducklings trapped in storm drains as well as monitor hen mallards who chose to nest in some not so safe areas. Volunteers monitor the nests looking for when the eggs hatch so the ducklings, and mother, can be moved safely to a wetland so they don't have to cross busy streets or get trapped in storm drains. If you find a mallard nesting in an urban area where getting to a wetland would be difficult or find ducklings trapped please call Barkhausen at 920-434-2824 and we will contact a Duck Rescue volunteer. Please note this program is for ducks only, not geese, and volunteers can only cover the Green Bay and Appleton area. Thanks to the current, and past, volunteers who have, since 1998, rescued over 21,600 ducks!
