On the evening of Saturday May 23, 2026 signal 5-5-5-5 was sent announcing the line of duty death of Boston Firefighter Robert Kilduff Jr. of Rescue 2. FF Kilduff was a 24 year veteran of the Boston Fire Dept. and had served his country in the United States Marine Corp. FF Kilduff gave his life protecting the people of Boston at a 3rd alarm fire in Dorchester. Besides his brothers and sisters of the Boston Fire Dept. he leaves behind an extended family including his two children. FF Kilduff comes from a legacy family of well-known and respected firefighters. On this Memorial Day please keep his soul, his peers and family in your thoughts. Arrangements are incomplete at time of this posting. Gov. Healey has ordered the US Flags to be flown at half-staff until the sunset of the day of his funeral. Sudbury Fire would like to extend our most profound sympathies to the family of FF Kilduff and all of the Boston Fire Department. RIP BK.

This weekend we honor those who made the ultimate sacrifice for our country, for our Commonwealth, and for the Town of Sudbury. From the first battle in Concord in 1775 to today, residents and employees of Sudbury have stepped forward to defend our freedom. Honoring those who had fallen began in 1868 as “Decoration Day” to pay respects to those who fell in the Civil War. After World War 1 it became known as Memorial Day. Sudbury Fire would like to thank all those who served and laid down their lives for our freedom. In 2000 Congress passed the moment of Remembrance Act that asks all Americans to pause in a moment of silence for 1 minute at 3pm on Memorial Day to reflect on those who had fallen. In this busy weekend that has unofficially been named the beginning of summer, we ask that you take some time this weekend and remember those who gave themselves for us. Rest in peace to all those who have fought for America’s cause.

May 17-23rd marks the 52 annual National EMS week that recognizes the work that Fire/EMS and emergency room staff conduct every single day. Whether it is a medical emergency or accident they will be there to help. These EMS professionals were on the front lines of the Covid epidemic and are prepared to tackle whatever confronts them. Sudbury Fire is proud to be the provider of Emergency Medical Services for the Town of Sudbury. We would like to recognize all our staff, our mutual aid Fire/EMS partners, our dispatchers who process the 911 call and provide over the phone medical assistance and the ER staff of all the hospitals that provide services for their compassionate and professional care. Thank you to all of you for such great service.

The Sudbury Fire Dept. wants to extend our condolences to the family, friends, peers and all the Massachusetts State Police Troopers and staff on the sudden and tragic passing of Trooper Kevin Trainor. Trooper Trainor laid down his life to protect the citizens of the Commonwealth. Rest in peace Trooper and may your family have ever lasting peace themselves knowing his heroism is valued. SUDFD also wants to recognize and thank the other public safety responders who went to that crash to provide fire/ems skills to the victims. They too are also feeling the emotional toll and stresses of such a tragedy.

Just a quick notification that on Friday May 1st Sudbury Fire will be working along our public safety partners Sudbury Police in conducting a mock crash at LSRHS. SUDFD and SUDPD will be working along students and staff in the SADD program to show what the consequences can be in making destructive decisions. We will try to be as realistic as possible by "responding" with lights and sirens with Fire and Police vehicles. We just want to get ahead of the message so people are not alarmed and cause any unnecessary angst.

It's hard to believe May 1st is this coming Friday already. The 2026 burning season of brush/yard waste expires Friday May 1st. The burning season is regulated by the Commonwealth of MA. There will be no extension of burning season. Any open fire after May 1st will be considered an "illegal burn" and will be extinguished by the Fire Dept. per MA regulations. Thank you to those who participated this year and managed their fires with utmost diligence. The 2027 burning season begins January 15th and will end May 1, 2027.

National Public Safety Communicators week is April 12-18th. Sudbury Fire would like to recognize our partners of Public safety Dispatch of the Holbrook Regional Emergency Communications Center (HRECC). HRECC conducts dispatching for Sudbury Fire and Police as well as numerous other agencies. They are one of the best regional dispatch centers around. Not only does HRECC support SUDFD, but HRECC is also the Control Point for the 23 cities and towns that form Fire District 14 which Sudbury Fire is part of. D14 Control coordinates all the specialized responses with in those 23 communities such as dive, high angle and trench rescue and handles day—day communications. Wherever you are and hear sirens, that means a public safety responder is going to an emergency and it all starts at the dispatch center with these extremely dedicated men and women answer the 911 phone call, dispatch the appropriate apparatus and maintain constant communications as the emergency scene. They are the “unseen heroes”. Thank you HRECC for outstanding service to SUDFD. If you want to listen to these heroes, click this link from radioreference.com

Medway Engine 5 has been on loan to SUDFD for the past year as we addressed some fleet issues. This engine served with dignity and was very reliable. SUDFD is on much better footing now with our fleet and E5 has completed its service. Sudbury Fire wants to thank Medway Fire with such great mutual aid in providing a loaner truck in our time of need. “The nickel” did us well and we are grateful.
