"Suffice it to say that as long as there is life there is hope"
Decades of dedicated service, changing policy, pioneering change and ensuring justice for victims and survivors of Suffolk County.
Keri graduated from New York Law School in 1988 and joined the Suffolk County DA's Office shortly thereafter as an Assistant District Attorney. New assistants were introduced to the bureau chiefs from each bureau.
Each chief described the work being done by the bureau. The late Mary Werner gave a presentation for what was called the Family Crime Bureau, the bureau responsible for the prosecution of domestic violence and crimes against children.
Keri leaned over to her office mate and said, "You're never going to catch me handling those cases."
Never say never.
Keri was assigned to the District Court Bureau, the Case Advisory Bureau, the Major Crime Bureau and the East End Bureau. In 1992, the late Dari Schwartz called Keri with an offer that would change the course of Keri's career.
Dari invited Keri to join the Family Crime Bureau. Keri accepted that invitation because, as any assistant knows, when a supervisor invites you to join a bureau you don't say no.
Keri remained a member of what is now called the Child Abuse and Domestic Violence Bureau until her retirement in 2020. During her tenure Keri became the attorney-in-charge of the specialized Domestic Violence Unit, and she went on to become the Deputy Bureau Chief under Dari Schwartz. Keri would often describe her time in the bureau as the worst job she ever loved.
In 2023, District Attorney Ray Tierney asked Keri if she would consider returning to the Domestic Violence Unit "to help them out during the summer." Keri is still there today
Anyone who has been assigned to the Child Abuse and Domestic Violence Bureau knows that there's a constant cycle of highs and lows. Unlike some other bureaus every case has an identifiable survivor or victim.
Each assistant strives to do the best she or he can in seeking justice. And justice can be had in many ways.
"Suffice it to say that as long as there is life there is hope."
