In 1995, Dolly Parton began mailing books to children in her home county, hoping to inspire a love of reading in honor of her father, who could not read or write.

That idea lives here, too. Every month, 1,778 children in Suffolk, Virginia, find a book in their mailbox because of the neighbors who fund it, the volunteers who run it, and the woman from Sevier County, Tennessee, who started it all.

Even with her butterfly wings, Dolly’s impact is every bit as powerful. Yesterday, so many people visited our site that it slowed down, and we received more than 20 new enrollment requests. We think that pretty much says it all.

Thank you, Dolly. We will always love you.
