Suffolk Public Schools was honored to welcome Virginia Superintendent of Public Instruction Jenna Conway and Secretary of Education Dr. Jeffery O. Smith to Mack Benn Jr. Elementary School!

Principal Rhoads led our guests on a tour of the school, where they visited classrooms, connected with students and educators, and saw firsthand the meaningful work taking place each day. The visit also provided an opportunity to share the school’s successes, discuss its needs and explore ways state and local leaders can continue working together to support student achievement.

Thank you to Principal Rhoads and the entire Mack Benn Jr. team for proudly showcasing the great work happening throughout their school!

We’re already into Week 2, but we’re still sharing some of the smiles from an exciting first week of school!

As Dr. Gordon visited schools throughout the division during the first week, he had the opportunity to see our students and staff in action and check in on the start of another great school year.

His message for the 2026 to 2027 school year remains clear: The Path to Achievement starts with showing up, staying focused, and respecting one another. This year, we’re encouraging every student to Attend to Achieve, take advantage of every opportunity, and stay on the path toward their goals. For our seniors, that means keeping graduation in sight and making sure they have everything needed to cross the finish line. We are Team Suffolk, and we’re all in this together. Here’s to a year filled with achievement, growth, respect, and plenty more smiles!

The Power of One: A Community Rooted in Excellence.

We believe excellence isn't just something students achieve, it's something they learn to model, share and inspire in others. Through student leadership clubs like Anchored4Life, Battle of the Books, BETA, Brotherhood, Girls on the Run, Ladies of Distinction and Spirit Squad, our students are discovering their voices, building confidence and learning what it means to lead.

Each year, 100+ Florence Bowser students have opportunities to lead, serve, compete and grow.

One student who steps forward. One opportunity to lead. One act of service. One voice that inspires another.

That is the Power of One.

The Power of One: One District. One STEM Vision.
Suffolk Public Schools is proud to lead the way as Virginia’s first K–12 STEM model, creating a pathway for students to explore, innovate, and achieve from elementary school through graduation.

From Booker T. Washington Elementary School, Virginia’s only Elementary Lab School, to the launch of STEM Middle Years Programs at John F. Kennedy and King’s Fork middle schools, and nationally recognized Project Lead The Way programs in Biomedical Science at Lakeland High School and Engineering at Nansemond River High School, our students have opportunities to build skills that prepare them for what’s next.

Together, we are developing 21st-century learners who are prepared to become productive citizens in society.

One district. One STEM vision. The Path to Achievement.
