Mayor Carol McCutcheon was recently recognized by the Houston Business Journal as part of its Women Who Mean Business awards, which celebrate women whose leadership and impact are helping shape the future of the Houston region and Fort Bend County.

Mayor McCutcheon made history in 2025 when she became Sugar Land’s first female mayor. We’re proud to see her recognized for her leadership, dedication to our community and continued work to help move Sugar Land forward. 📌 ICYMI: Here's what happened at last night's City Council meeting!

City Council met last night to discuss and take action on several items affecting Sugar Land’s future, finances and services. Here’s the quick recap:

📋 Consent Agenda: Council approved several items on the consent agenda. These are routine or administrative items that are grouped together and typically approved with one vote, allowing Council to focus discussion on items that need more consideration.

Other agenda items discussed:
🏗️ Economic development: Council held a public hearing and gave first consideration to designating approximately 3.35 acres in the Sugar Land Business Park as a reinvestment zone for potential economic development incentives.
💰 City fees: Council held a public hearing and gave first consideration to a revised City fee schedule covering a variety of City services, utilities, drainage and stormwater, telecommunications and Fire-EMS fees.
🏘️ Park at Eldridge: Council held a public hearing and gave first consideration to the 2027 service plan and 2026 assessments for properties within the Park at Eldridge Public Improvement District.
📊 City budget: Council approved an amendment to the FY 2025-2026 City budget addressing certain capital and operating budget matters.
💼 Tax abatements: Council discussed proposed updates to the City’s Tax Abatement Guidelines and Criteria to better align the program with Sugar Land’s economic development priorities.

We’re heading into the halfway stretch of hurricane season, and we have a new guest coming to town. 🌧️

Tropical Depression 5 has officially been upgraded to Tropical Storm Edouard. The storm has maximum sustained winds of 40 mph, with heavy rainfall and the potential for flash flooding being the primary concerns throughout the day.

While current forecasts indicate Edouard will only have minimal impacts for Sugar Land, conditions can change, so it’s a good time to stay weather aware and prepared.

A few reminders:
-Never drive through flooded roadways. Turn around, don’t drown.
-Charge phones and other essential devices in case of power outages, and have flashlights and extra batteries ready.
-Secure or bring in loose outdoor items that could be moved by wind or heavy rain.
-Clear leaves and debris from storm drains around your property to help keep water flowing.
-Stay up to date with the latest forecast and weather information from the National Weather Service Houston/Galveston office and local officials.

Hopefully, our guest keeps moving along, but it's a good time to keep an eye on the forecast and stay weather aware.

Our next City Council meeting is tonight at 5:30 p.m.!

The Sugar Land City Council generally meets at 5:30 p.m. on the first and third Tuesday of each month, with workshops held on the fourth Tuesday. Meetings are held at City Hall in the City Council Chamber, 2700 Town Center Blvd. N.
