Hello Mi-Wuk Sugar Pine residents,

It is with mixed emotions that I officially announce my resignation as your Fire Chief. While many of you have already heard the news, I wanted to personally share it with the community that has meant so much to me.

I have accepted an opportunity to return to a department where I previously worked. This wasn’t an easy decision. Mi-Wuk Sugar Pine has truly become home to me, and you simply can’t beat the beauty of this community or the incredible people we have the privilege to serve.

Serving as your Fire Chief has been one of the most rewarding experiences of my career. Watching members grow into outstanding firefighters, seeing careers take off, and helping shape the department into what it is today has been an honor. I’m incredibly proud of what we’ve accomplished together.

As much as I’ve enjoyed leading the department, I’ve realized that I miss being out in the field. I wanted to get back to the hands-on side of the fire service and spend more time serving on the front lines and a little less behind a desk. It simply felt like the right time for a new chapter.

This isn’t goodbye just yet. I will remain on as your part-time Fire Chief while we recruit and hire the next qualified Chief. During this transition, I’ll also be assisting the hiring committee to help ensure the department continues moving forward. With the outstanding leadership of our Assistant Chief, Station Captain, and dedicated firefighters, I have complete confidence that the department will continue providing the excellent service this community deserves.

I also hope to remain involved as a volunteer Chief in some capacity because this community will always be special to me.

To our Board of Directors, our firefighters, our volunteers, our staff, and every member of this community—thank you. Your support, encouragement, and commitment to your fire department have made this one of the best places I’ve ever had the privilege to serve.

I hope you’ll welcome the next Fire Chief with the same kindness and support you’ve shown me. They’ll be inheriting an outstanding department and an incredible community.

I’ll miss seeing so many familiar faces around the station, but this isn’t really goodbye. You’ll still see me around the community—just in a different role.

From the bottom of my heart, thank you for allowing me the honor of serving as your Fire Chief. It has truly been a privilege.

— Chief James Klyn

Bear Trap Fire – Minnesota

One of our own is hard at work on the Bear Trap Fire in Minnesota serving as the Medical Unit Leader (MEDL) for the incident.

Photo 1 & 2: The journey started with a charter flight from Idaho to Minnesota with other incident management team members.

Photo 3: Even while deployed, firefighters are always learning. Here he’s checking out one of the unique medical response apparatus’s that may provide for a medical extraction if needed.

Photo 4: And here’s the part no one posts on I social media ….😄

Despite the title sounding exciting, a Medical Unit Leader spends much of the day behind a computer coordinating medical plans, tracking personnel, organizing resources, documenting injuries, planning emergency medical responses, and making sure hundreds (sometimes thousands) of firefighters have access to medical care if something goes wrong.

It’s not all helicopters and fireline action—sometimes protecting firefighters means protecting spreadsheets.

Thank you for representing Mi-Wuk Sugar Pine Fire Protection District while helping keep those battling the Bear Trap Fire safe.

Tonight!! Hope to see you there!
