Possible Lightning Strike Investigated at Hopkins County Courthouse; No Damage Reported

Sulphur Springs, Texas

April 29, 2026

Emergency personnel responded to the Hopkins County Courthouse at approximately 11:49 a.m. today following reports of a possible lightning strike to the building.

The Sulphur Springs Fire Department responded promptly to the scene, with assistance from the Hopkins County Fire Department, to assess the situation and conduct a thorough investigation of the property.

After an extensive inspection, officials confirmed that no fire, structural damage, or other property damage occurred as a result of the incident.

While no physical damage was identified, several internet and related communication services experienced temporary disruptions. Officials report that affected systems are currently in the process of being restored, and service is gradually returning to normal.

Following the investigation, Sulphur Springs Fire Chief David James gave the official all-clear for courthouse operations to resume.

“The courthouse has been thoroughly inspected, and no hazards were identified,” said Chief James. “The building is safe for normal operations to continue.”

Court proceedings and all courthouse functions may now resume as scheduled.

A cold front and dryline will bring a chance of thunderstorms today and tonight, some of which may be severe. The highest severe weather threat will likely be this afternoon and evening for areas near and east of I-35.

Monday April 27th Update: The potential for strong and severe storms has increased across our northeastern counties for this afternoon. Coverage should be isolated. Large hail and damaging winds would be the main hazards with any severe storms.

A Tornado Watch is now in effect for much of North Texas through 11 pm this evening (4/25). Any storm that develops in this area would have the potential to produce hail greater than softball size, a couple of strong tornadoes and damaging winds. Make sure to have multiple ways to receive warnings and to have a plan in place this afternoon and evening!

Severe weather will be possible today across parts of North Texas late this afternoon and evening. Not everyone will see storms, but those who do may experience very large hail, damaging wind gusts, and even tornadoes. Stay weather aware today!

A few strong to severe storms are forecast late afternoon and evening, mainly in the northeast parts of the forecast area, with the most likely timing from 6 PM to 11 PM. Main hazards include large hail (over 2 inches) and damaging winds, with a lower threat of tornadoes as well.
