Introducing the Giant Leaf-footed Bug, the notorious destroyer of summer gardens! This insect is infamous for its insatiable appetite, particularly for tomato plants. It first feasts on overgrown weeds before moving on to lush vegetable gardens. One of its most remarkable adaptations is its ability to emit a strong unpleasant odor when disturbed, crushed, or handled. These bugs are skilled fliers and may even fly directly towards your face. They mimic predatory assassin bugs, having bright red or orange colors for the nymphs, similar shaped bodies, and both have antenna adding to their menacing reputation. However, despite their destructive nature, they also serve as a food source for beneficial predators such as spiders, birds and assassin bugs.

Oh Deer! The fawns are out and about at South Sulphur. This set of twins and mother were spotted this morning at the Buggy Whip camping loop. Did you know that over half of white tail deer in Texas give birth to twins? Don’t feel bad if you can’t find the second one hiding in the background, fawns have white spots making them well camouflaged in the woods.

You can learn more about White Tailed Deer through TPWD’s Texas Junior Naturalist program at https://tpwd.texas.gov/education/resources/texas-junior-naturalists/watching-wildlife/white-tailed-deer

Water Safety Time! The summer heat is officially here, and the lake is calling! To help everyone stay cool and safe at South Sulphur, our crew set up a loaner life jacket rack next to the ring at the swim beach. Earlier this week the team practiced their ring‑throwing skills to be ready if anyone needs a hand. Grab a life jacket, enjoy the water, and have an awesome (and safe!) time at the lake!

PIER UPDATE! It's getting close! The exact completion date is still unknown due to possible weather delays but it's looking like it should be completed sometime next month (July 2026). Some pictures of the pier and area today. The pier itself is almost completed, you can see the areas for accessible fishing, the bait shelf along the platform area, the underwater lights are there but not placed on the lakebed yet. The underwater fish attractant lights will be on a timer that customers can turn on when they come out to fish after dark! Along with the work on the pier is work in Sunset Cove, new accessible picnic tables and grills will go on new pads, a new sidewalk to the pier, and lights along the sidewalk will be installed soon.

Not only is it National Trails Day tomorrow, it's FREE Fishing Day!
The first Saturday of June everyone - both residents and out-of-state visitors- can legally fish without a license on any public waterway in the state!
Did you know that in a Texas State Park once you pay your entrance fees you do not need a fishing license to fish from the shore, or pier all year long? Well, it's true! And most parks participate in the loaner tackle program.

PIER UPDATE! The construction crew is hard at work installing the decking and railing on the pier. At the same time they are shaping the Sunset Cove shoreline for the installation of the revetment mattress (the grey concrete) and installing the electric lines that will be used to light up the pier, fish cleaning station, and walking path from the Sunset Cove parking lot to the pier. Right now the completion date looks to be in June.
