Main Street Lighting Construction Update

Construction work on the Main Street Lighting Project is beginning Tuesday, May 26, 2026. This project will impact all on-street parking in the project area located on Main Street between 3rd & 4th Street. Pedestrians should also expect detours around the work zone for everyone’s safety. These impacts are anticipated to last approximately three weeks to a month.

Sultan Simplified: How Does Stormwater Drainage Work?

When rain falls in Sultan, the water flowing into streets, gutters, and storm drains do not go to a wastewater treatment plant. Instead, stormwater travels through a network of catch basins, pipes, culverts, ditches, and stormwater facilities designed to move water away from roads, neighborhoods, and public spaces to help reduce flooding and protect infrastructure. The City of Sultan maintains approximately 15.5 miles of stormwater system pipes, hundreds of catch basins and inlets, and multiple stormwater facilities throughout the community.

The City regularly inspects and maintains stormwater infrastructure to help keep water flowing properly—especially during the wetter months. Sultan Municipal Code Title 14 established the City’s stormwater utility and provides the framework for managing stormwater collection, drainage infrastructure, maintenance, and surface water management throughout the city. These systems help protect roads, property, waterways, and public safety during heavy rain events.

Stormwater pollution prevention is also an important part of the City’s work. Unlike wastewater from sinks or toilets, stormwater receives little to no treatment before entering local creeks, rivers, and streams. Automotive fluids, paint, pesticides, litter, construction debris, grass clippings, and pet waste can all pollute waterways if they enter storm drains. Illegal dumping into the drainage system is prohibited and can negatively impact fish habitat, water quality, and public health. Residents and businesses can help by keeping storm drains clear, properly disposing of waste materials, and preventing pollutants from entering the system.

Did You Know? Storm drains are intended for rainwater only. Anything that enters a storm drain can flow directly into nearby waterways without treatment.

Sultan Simplified: Why Are There Utility Markings and Flags Around Town?

Have you ever noticed colored paint or small flags appearing along roads, sidewalks, or even in yards before construction or digging begins? Those markings identify underground utilities like water, sewer, power, gas, and communication lines before excavation starts. These temporary markings help crews work safely and avoid disrupting important community services.

Before digging begins, contractors and homeowners are required to contact 811 “Call Before You Dig” (also known as Dial Before You Dig) to request utility locates. After a locate request is submitted, utility companies to include the City of Sultan Public Works Department mark underground lines using standardized colors so crews know what may be below the surface before excavation begins. Sultan Municipal Code also requires excavation work within public rights-of-way to follow utility locating and safety requirements before digging can occur.

These markings may only last a short time, but they play an important role in preventing costly repairs, service interruptions, and safety hazards. Whether planting a tree, installing a fence, or starting a construction project, calling 811 before digging is a free and simple step that helps protect the community.

✨ Did You Know? Washington State law requires utility locates before many digging projects begin—even for homeowners working on private property. Learn more about safe digging and utility locates by calling 811 or visiting Washington 811.

Sultan Simplified: Parks, Peak Season Maintenance & Renting a Space

As the weather warms up, the City of Sultan’s parks come to life filled with birthday parties, weekend picnics, and everyday outdoor fun. To keep Osprey Park, Reese Park, Travelers Park, and other City open spaces ready for it all, public works crews ramp up spring and summer maintenance. That means mowing and landscaping, playground inspections, restroom upkeep, and more so every visit is clean, safe, and enjoyable. Planning your own gathering? Park shelters and facilities are available to reserve so you can lock in the perfect spot.

With more visitors (and furry friends) out and about, a few simple rules go a long way. Dogs are required to be on a leash in public areas and are only allowed off leash in designated dog park spaces. And of course, don’t forget to scoop the p**p! Also, please help keep fields safe by preventing dogs from digging holes, especially in open grassy areas that are often used for sports and recreation. These small actions help keep parks welcoming for everyone, from kids on the playground to neighbors enjoying a walk.

City staff work hard to maintain these shared spaces, but the community plays a big role too. Cleaning up after pets and following park guidelines helps protect water quality, prevent conflicts, and keep parks looking their best all season long.

Did You Know? Park shelters and facilities fill up quickly in the spring and summer—so reserving early is the best way to secure your spot! Learn more and book here: https://sultanwa.gov/163/Facility-Reservations
