Our family was watching the network broadcast of the Miss USA pageant in the early 1970s when the world discovered Summer Shade! That's because the Miss Kentucky contestant, Tamara Branstetter, let everyone know where she was from. She did us proud šŸ™‚! - Tim England.

I imagine there are many who visit the "Growing Up in Summer Shade, KY" FB page who attended the elementary school on top of the hill. My first year there was 1963, and the school closed in 2013. I attended the closing ceremonies and had a snapshot made for a 50-year comparison. Anyone else have fond memories of the place? -- Tim England

This item was shared by Becky Dubree who found a picture of A.B. Mayfield's home where the Edmonton State Bank in Summer Shade now stands. Becky says Mr. Mayfield also had a livery stable where travelers using Highway 90 could rest their horses. Mayfield was a longtime merchant in Summer Shade (from 1898 until his death in 1936). His store was evidently located at the intersection of Highways 640 and 90. Before settling in Summer Shade at about age 38, he was a merchant in Randolph, KY. His son, Lynn Mayfield, was a dentist whose practice was based in Glasgow. Dr. Mayfield served as Glasgow's mayor for a time.
