The Dorchester County Sheriffโ€™s Office announces that an increased law enforcement presence and traffic safety checkpoint will be conducted on Wednesday, June 10, 2026, beginning at 4:00 p.m. on Clemson Drive in the Clemson Terrace neighborhood.

On Monday, June 8, 2026, at approximately 11:08 A.M., deputies assigned to Patrol Team One were conducting proactive patrol along Charleston Highway in the Saint George area when they identified a stolen vehicle.

Deputies initiated a traffic stop at the Shell gas station located at 9481 Charleston Highway. As deputies approached, the driver refused to comply with lawful commands and fled the scene, initiating a vehicle pursuit.

The suspect drove recklessly and with complete disregard for public safety.

Throughout the pursuit, Cutter reached speeds exceeding 90 miles per hour while traveling through the communities of Saint George, Dorchester and Harleyville, along Interstate 26, and across rural dirt roads and agricultural areas.

The pursuit lasted approximately 40 minutes as deputies worked diligently to monitor traffic conditions and bring the incident to a safe conclusion while minimizing risks to motorists and residents.

During the pursuit, deputies successfully deployed stop sticks, puncturing both passenger side tires of the stolen vehicle.

Despite the significant damage to the vehicle, Cutter continued to flee for several additional miles, demonstrating a continued disregard for the safety of the public and responding law enforcement officers.

The pursuit ultimately ended near the intersection of Highway 178 and Highway 78 when Cutter drove the disabled vehicle into a wooded area. He then exited the vehicle and attempted to evade capture on foot. Deputies quickly apprehended Cutter without further incident.

The Dorchester County Sheriffโ€™s Office is pleased to report that no deputies, motorists, or innocent bystanders were injured during the course of the pursuit.

The Dorchester County Sheriffโ€™s Office also extends its appreciation to the Harleyville Police Department, and Holly Hill Police Department for their assistance and cooperation during the pursuit.

Cutter has been charged with Possession of a Stolen Vehicle and Failure to Stop for Blue Lights.

He remains in custody at the L.C. Knight Detention Center.

The Dorchester County Sheriffโ€™s Office will be conducting active shooter / active assailant training exercises at Saint John the Beloved Catholic Church, located at 28 Sumter Avenue in downtown Summerville, on multiple dates throughout June and July.

The training is designed to enhance deputiesโ€™ preparedness and response capabilities during critical incidents involving active threats.

These realistic training scenarios provide valuable hands-on experience and help ensure law enforcement personnel are equipped to respond effectively to emergencies within our community.

Residents and citizens in the area should be aware that during the training exercises they may hear simulated gunfire (blank rounds), loud verbal commands, and other sounds associated with law enforcement response scenarios.

Additionally, members of the public may observe deputies carrying training weapons, moving rapidly between structures, or conducting tactical operations on church grounds.

To help avoid confusion and notify the public, the Dorchester County Sheriffโ€™s Office Training Unit will place signage around the church property indicating that law enforcement training is underway.

The Dorchester County Sheriffโ€™s Office is proud to recognize Corporal Lowe, Lieutenant Hunt, Deputy Simpson, Sergeant Barnhill, Sergeant Buchanan, Deputy Herman, Deputy Hunt, Deputy Rhode, and Deputy Smalley for their exceptional actions and professionalism on the evening of May 25, 2026.

While monitoring radio traffic on Memorial Day, Corporal Lowe became aware of a homicide investigation being conducted by the Charleston County Sheriffโ€™s Office.

Through proactive investigative efforts, he developed information that led him to believe the suspect may be traveling to a residence in Dorchester County.

Corporal Lowe began patrolling potential travel routes and soon located a vehicle matching the suspect description.

After maintaining visual contact and relaying critical information to responding deputies, Corporal Lowe coordinated with Lieutenant Hunt and Deputy Simpson to safely conduct a felony traffic stop.

Their professionalism, teamwork, and tactical discipline resulted in the homicide suspect being taken into custody without incident just hours after the crime.

Moments later, Sergeant Barnhill, Sergeant Buchanan, Deputy Herman, Deputy Hunt, Deputy Rhode, and Deputy Smalley arrived on scene and assisted in securing the vehicle, so it may be preserved as evidence.

"This recognition reflects the vigilance, initiative, and teamwork that our deputies demonstrate every day," ๐ฌ๐š๐ข๐ ๐’๐ก๐ž๐ซ๐ข๐Ÿ๐Ÿ ๐’๐š๐ฆ ๐‘๐ข๐œ๐ก๐š๐ซ๐๐ฌ๐จ๐ง."As a result of their dedication and quick action, a homicide suspect was safely taken into custody and critical evidence was preserved. The recognition ceremony was attended by Charleston County Sheriff Carl Ritchie and members of his command staff, underscoring the strong partnership and cooperation between our agencies in the pursuit of public safety.

Please join us in congratulating these deputies on a job exceptionally well done.

On January 3, 2026, detectives with the Dorchester County Metro Narcotics Unit responded to a residence in the 100 block of Home Farm Road in Saint George in reference to a fatal overdose.

Over the course of the investigation, detectives with the Dorchester County Metro Narcotics Unit conducted numerous investigative actions, including the ex*****on of search warrants, to methodically build a criminal case.

Through their investigation, detectives determined that Poland supplied fentanyl to the victim, resulting in the victim's death.

On June 2, 2026, members of the Dorchester County Metro Narcotics Unit, Criminal Investigations Division, and Uniform Patrol Division executed a search warrant at Poland's residence.

During the search, investigators located approximately 0.2 grams of presumptive fentanyl consistent in color and packaging with the fentanyl recovered during the overdose investigation, as well as approximately 3.2 grams of presumptive methamphetamine.

Keith Allen Poland was arrested and charged with Fentanyl-Induced Homicide, Possession with Intent to Distribute Methamphetamine, and Possession of Fentanyl.

The Fentanyl-Induced Homicide charge was brought under South Carolina's newly enacted statute that allows law enforcement and prosecutors to hold individuals criminally responsible when they unlawfully distribute fentanyl that results in another person's death.

The law provides an additional tool to combat the growing fentanyl crisis.

Sheriff Sam Richardson praised the work of detectives and reaffirmed the agency's commitment to holding offenders accountable.

"This case sends a clear message to anyone who traffics fentanyl in our community: if your actions result in the death of another person, you will be held accountable," ๐ฌ๐š๐ข๐ ๐’๐ก๐ž๐ซ๐ข๐Ÿ๐Ÿ ๐’๐š๐ฆ ๐‘๐ข๐œ๐ก๐š๐ซ๐๐ฌ๐จ๐ง.

"South Carolina's Fentanyl-Induced Homicide statute provides law enforcement and prosecutors with a powerful tool to pursue those whose actions directly leads to the loss of life. We remain committed to protecting our communities and ensuring that those who distribute this deadly poison face the full consequences of their actions."

This investigation remains ongoing.
