HOWARD FINSTER (1916-2001)
Howard Finster is one of America’s most widely known and prolific self-taught artists of the 20th century, producing 46,991 individually numbered pieces of art and creating a 2.5-acre art environment known as Paradise Garden in the foothills of the Appalachian Mountains located in Summerville, Georgia. Born in 1916 in Valley Head, Alabama, Finster moved as a young man to

Chattooga County to establish his family and served as a Baptist preacher for the next 40 years. In addition to his main calling as a pastor, Finster provided services to the area including bicycle, TV, and lawn mower repair that helped support his wife and five children. THE VISION
In 1976, while applying paint to a refurbished bicycle, Finster noticed a smudge on his index finger had a perfect human face. A voice spoke to him instructing, “Paint sacred art.” Not sure that he had painting ability, Finster pulled out a dollar bill and started drawing George Washington. From that fateful day forward, Finster created 46,991 numbered works of art, complete with hand-scrawled messages intended to save souls, with subjects ranging from pop culture icons, angels, visions of other worlds, Elvis, and historical characters. Word spread quickly and a steady stream of college students, artists, musicians, and art collectors visited the charismatic preacher. The growing support and attention helped Finster grow his Garden, which ultimately expanded to 20-plus structures, mostly notably including his signature creation, the World Folk Art Church. HOWARD FINSTER INTRODUCES SELF-TAUGHT/FOLK ART TO POP CULTURE
To take his message into new realms, Finster designed album covers for the rock bands R.E.M, Talking Heads and Adam Again, and R.E.M. and the country group Blackhawk filmed popular videos in Paradise Garden. Finster’s famous appearance on The Tonight Show with Johnny Carson further advanced his fame and audience for his evangelical message. Howard Finster “went home” in 2001 leaving behind his greatest legacy, Paradise Garden. Today Finster’s art can be found in museums worldwide, including the Smithsonian Museum of American Art, Library of Congress, Atlanta’s High Museum of Art, the Milwaukee Art Museum, New York’s Museum of American Folk Art, and Virginia’s Abby Aldrich Rockefeller Museum of Art. In 1984, Howard was selected to represent the U.S. The Smithsonian Museum of American Art alone boasts 16 Finster works in its permanent collection. Howard Finster’s children’s album was released by the Smithsonian Folkways Recordings label. Finster has been featured in Smithsonian Magazine (2015) and on Smithsonian World TV show (1988), and is included in the Smithsonian Archives of American Art. PARADISE GARDEN-
A historic art environment model for success

It serves as a regional art center providing art education, programs, tours, camps, and workshops to over 700 children, seniors, and adults each year. Discovering Southern folk artists including Howard Finster put Karen Light on the path to launching Garde Rail Gallery, now based on Austin, TX, 28 years ago. Here, in words and two 1996 photos from Paradise Garden, she expresses the satisfaction in the artful road she’s traveled.

The City of Chickamauga, GA, is presenting Chickapalooza, an art and music celebration, on Saturday, June 27, with proceeds benefiting Paradise Garden!
To lend this fun event even more Finster flavor, the concert includes the R.E.M. cover band Dead Letter Office, which in this video plays a favorite cut by fans of the Athens-born band, "Losing My Religion."
The Chickapalooza fun kicks off in downtown Chickamauga with a free all-day street arts festival -- which will include Finster Fest artists mixed in with a large group of regional makers. music and food -- followed by the ticketed Chickapalooza concert. In addition to Dead Letter Office (from Western New York), cover bands Elevation and Disciple of the Garden will rock the music of U2 and Soundgarden's Chris Cornell, respectively. Concertgoers will enjoy the show from the lawn of the historic Gordon Lee Mansion for Art. (Ticketing link in Comments.)

Conservators Elisabetta Perfetti and Laura Garavoglia recently completed their work on Howard Finster's "Stairway to Heaven" mural behind our Paradise Garden Museum & Visitor Center, and the difference between the “after” photo (top) and the “before” one (bottom) is striking!
It gives us a vision for how transformative needed conservation elsewhere around Howard’s folk art environment can be.
Up next, pending significant additional fundraising, are several other murals, the serpent mound concrete sculpture and the largest project, the Mosaic Garden.
Meanwhile, we look forward to our guests enjoying the “Stairway to Heaven” mural, now returned to the vivid and inspiring way Howard created it!

Howard Finster believed that everyone has an artist in him/her waiting to get out.
So, we’re so pleased that our June exhibit in the Paradise Garden Museum & Visitor Center is by K through 5th grade students from Summerville’s Leroy Massey Elementary School who KNOW they are artists.
This last school year, our Garden executive director Davia Weatherill and operations manager Mary Shewan worked with these young makers and their art teachers on a variety of artmaking projects inspired by Rev. Finster. The teachers, Atteka and Mary, chose the works for the Garden exhibit.
The artist in the photo created the banjo (Howard’s favorite instrument) and proudly brought her family to the Garden to see it on display.
Students whose work was selected received a certificate inviting them to view the Garden exhibit and an invitation to our summer art camp, coming June 23-26 (with spots still available).
We’re proud of all of them!

It's getting to be summer art camp time, and it's hard to imagine a more inspiring site for a camp than Howard Finster's Paradise Garden!
Our fully equipped Art & Learning Center opens up to Howard's 4-acre folk art environment, which is listed on the National Register of Historic Places and presents art of many types by Howard (and countless other artists) around every bend. 🖼️
To be held June 23-26, our camp for rising 3rd through 8th graders offers hands-on creative sessions for students who enjoy making art and are excited to explore their creativity 👩‍🎨 in a focused, hands-on environment.
Our wonderful art teacher, Ellen Gadberry, who has a knack for turning artmaking 🖌️ into an enjoyable adventure, will be leading the camp again this year.
We have some openings, but don't dally. And thanks to Operation Roundup, a program of North Georgia EMC, we have some scholarships available for Northwest Georgia middle school students.
Live beyond Northwest Georgia but want your budding artist to attend camp? Consider booking one of our three Airbnbs so other family members can enjoy the Garden, too! Details: https://paradisegardenfoundation.org/stay-the-night/

📞 Call us during Garden operating hours (11am-5 pm daily) for more art camp information: 706-800-0800.

This Memorial Day, we salute brave service members who made the ultimate sacrifice with this Howard Finster print, “Oh Say Can You See,” which spotlights Francis Scott Key’s "Star Spangled Banner."
In 1992, Washington, D.C.'s Govinda Gallery hosted the exhibition "Howard Finster: American Flag Paintings," featuring a collection made by the patriotic Georgia folk artist (1916-2001). The gallery also published an exhibition catalog as well as two limited edition silkscreen prints, “Oh Say Can You See” and “More Than A Piece of Cloth.” Each 26" x 35" print on archival paper was hand-pulled. They are signed and titled in pencil by Howard.
🇺🇸
We have copies of “Oh Say Can You See” available as part of our ongoing Paradise Garden exhibition “Saving Souls: How Howard Finster Used Prints to Multiply His Message” (now on view in the World's Folk Art Church). The prints are available for purchase, with a percentage benefiting Paradise Garden’s daily operations and ongoing restoration.
