When a child battling cancer is granted a wish, it’s usually something joyful.

A dream trip.
Meeting a hero.
Something they held onto through months of hospital visits and painful treatments.

But when 14-year-old Jude Baker got that chance, he didn’t ask for something for himself.

Jude was diagnosed with Ewing Sarcoma when he was just 12 years old.

The treatments were brutal.

“It wasn't even knowing I could die,” he said. “The chemo… it hurt.”

After months of fighting, Jude finally rang the bell, marking the end of his treatment.

And Make-A-Wish Georgia told him the words every child hopes to hear: Whatever you want, we’ll make it happen.

Jude had his pick.

He could have gone anywhere.
Met anyone.
Done just about anything his heart desired.

Instead, he asked for a chance to help people in his community.

During his cancer treatments, Jude would see people experiencing homelessness when he walked into the hospital.

He never forgot them.

“I got out of my version of heck,” he said. “And I want to help others who are in their own version.”

So his wish turned into something beautiful.

Backpacks filled with supplies.
Sleeping bags for people with nowhere to sleep.
And a hot meal for anyone in Summerville who needed one.

More than 300 were helped.

And Jude refused to eat until every single one of them had been served first.

Now in remission, Jude says he hopes his wish inspires something simple.

“It doesn’t have to come from a wish,” he said. “You can help, too.”

Some kids wish to meet superheroes.

Turns out, Summerville already has one ❤️

Key Tips for This Weekend:
🔋 Change Batteries: Update all smoke and CO detectors with fresh batteries.
Test Alarms: Confirm detectors are working properly by pressing the test button.
Check Expiration: Verify the manufacture date to ensure detectors are not past their effective lifespan.
"Spring Forward": Don't forget to set clocks forward as daylight saving time begins at 2 a.m. on March 9, 2026.

For those needing assistance with smoke detector maintenance, the Teloga Volunteer Fire Department is available on Monday; please don't hesitate to contact us.
