Recently, our team members got the chance to hone in on some of their skills...but on a REAL HOUSE! Due to the generosity of a local business, we have been able to spend the last month replicating certain skills that we don't get the chance to practice often. The house, which is slated for demolition, has now been the subject of vertical ventilation, hose line management, and rapid intervention trainings, amongst other topics.

This opportunity doesn't come often, and the house has been used for just about every realistic scenario that it had to offer. About 50 local firefighters have benefitted from these trainings, and we couldn't be more thankful for the opportunity!

📍 District 2

On May 20th at approximately 3:32 PM, South Berkeley Fire District was dispatched to a report of a rolled over cement truck on State Road near the intersection with Black Tom Road.

Engine 202 {Eng. T. O'Donald} quickly arrived and confirmed the cement truck to be tipped over and blocking lanes of traffic. EMS crews were also on scene, providing care to the lone occupant, who thankfully only had minor injuries. The road remained closed for approximately 2 hours while crews worked to mitigate the scene.

🌾 Grain Bin Rescue Training 🚜

Recently, we were granted some specialized equipment by AgSouth to expand our capabilities! This new equipment is primarily used when someone becomes entrapped in a grain bin or storage silo. Although these types of emergencies are not common, when they do occur, they require specialized equipment and training to allow for a seamless operation.

Included in the purchase of the equipment was a 2-day class that was instructed by our friends at Clemson Agricultural Safety Program! Our members walked out of the class better informed, and proficient in the operation of the equipment. We are excited to continue expanding upon these specialties and building upon our capabilities to better serve our citizens!

Please see the update below regarding the lifting of the burn ban for the state.

SCFC to lift burning ban for all counties Friday: Officials urge vigilance while burning outdoors as drought conditions persist

COLUMBIA—The South Carolina Forestry Commission will lift the State Forester's Burning Ban for all counties, effective at 7 a.m., Friday, May 1.

Agency officials believe the combination of rain, elevated relative humidity, improved overnight recovery and a lack of significant wind in the forecast warrant removing all remaining counties from outdoor burning restrictions.

“Many areas of the state have seen rainfall this week, and higher relative humidity and fuel moisture continue to mitigate significant fire potential,” said SCFC Fire Chief Darryl Jones. “Though we expect even more rain across more of the state in the next week, people who choose to burn outdoors should still exercise vigilance as the rain we have received has not changed the state’s drought status.”

Start 'em young

Recently, our friend Patrick visited our firehouses to make content for his TikTok account. Patrick is 12 years old, and in the fire service, he's what we call a fire buff!

A fire buff is someone who films local fire apparatus and fire scenes, and shows a genuine interest in our profession. Fire buffs are similar to train and plane enthusiasts (RailFans and AvGeeks, for context).

If you get the chance, take a look at Patricks TikTok, . And for you local fire buffs, feel free to come down to any of our stations and take photos or videos whenever you'd like!
