Members of the Summerville Police Department K9 Unit were honored to attend the ceremonial signing of Fargo's Bill, a landmark piece of legislation that strengthens protections for South Carolina's law enforcement K9s.
The law increases penalties for those who intentionally injure or kill a police K9, requires restitution to help cover the costs of replacing and training a K9, and provides financial support to agencies when a K9 is injured or killed in the line of duty.
While commonly known as Fargo's Bill, the legislation also honors the legacy of several fallen and injured law enforcement K9s, including Hyco, Rico, Coba, Wick, Mikka, and Bumi, whose service and sacrifice helped inspire this important change.
Our K9 partners serve courageously alongside their handlers every day, protecting our communities and often placing themselves in harm's way. We are grateful to everyone who worked to make this legislation a reality and for their continued support of law enforcement K9 teams across South Carolina.
