Brayton Elementary 3rd and 4th grade students enjoyed a wonderful walking field trip to the Vito Gallo Senior Center as part of Brayton's Citizen of the Month community outreach tradition.

This year marked the 10th anniversary of this special event, which continues to build meaningful connections between students and senior citizens.

During the visit, students sang many songs from the seniors’ era and proudly shared their individual talents and interests. Performances and demonstrations included softball/baseball, football, soccer, piano playing, joke telling, ice hockey, paper crafts, coding, and even disc golf. The seniors greatly enjoyed watching and interacting with the students, and smiles and laughter filled the courtyard throughout the event.

The positive interactions between the children and seniors created a joyful atmosphere for everyone involved. Our students represented our school community with kindness, enthusiasm, and respect.

Teachers Erin Corea, Sam Marano, Naomi Tucker and Chris Miller organized and lead this memorable experience. We would also like to thank the helpful 3M parents whose support made the trip a success.

Summit Public Schools celebrated the ribbon cutting at the newly renovated Anderson Field House at Tatlock Park.

This was part of the $37.4 million bond improvements, which included the Summit High School media center, the lower turf field and more for the district. The fieldhouse is now a dedicated home for our Hilltopper student-athletes who play at Tatlock field.

The renovation brings: four updated locker rooms, an athletic trainer suite, four coaches' offices, and improved energy efficiencies and air flow.
Superintendent Scott Hough called it "a vision that’s years in the making" to support student athletes. Athletic Director Allison Flockhart emphasized, "It is a home for our student-athletes... a place where they will prepare, grow, compete, and create lifelong memories."

The building’s namesake is Summit legend Howard “Howie” Anderson, who led Hilltopper football from 1956 to 1986 and then served as the district’s Athletic Director.
The renovated building sets the stage for the next generation of student-athlete legends.

Lawton C. Johnson Summit Middle School hosted Tova Friedman, a survivor of Auschwitz last week for a presentation of history, resilience and remembrance to the school’s eight graders.

The visit, which was coordinated by Science Teacher Meredith Cohen, was part of the 8th grade Human Rights and Genocide units. It provided a vital perspective on empathy, and the enduring fight for human rights. Many LCJSMS 8th-grade students will soon visit the United States Holocaust Memorial Museum in Washington, D.C.

Friedman, who is the author of “The Daughter of Auschwitz", was introduced by her grandson Aron Goodman. Goodman created , which allows his grandmother’s story to reach millions on TikTok and bridges the gap between history and the digital age.

Friedman’s story of harrowing survival as a 5 and then 6-year-old child included hiding – in plain sight by avoiding eye contact to actually spending days in her home’s crawl space – to luck. For example, on the day she and others were waiting to go into the gas chamber, for a reason she’ll never know, they were sent back to their barracks.

In addition to the students approximately 40 parents as well as community members attended the presentation.

After the presentation, students asked Friedman questions about her experience and if she had advice on how to overcome hardship. She told the students, “You’re stronger than you think you are.”

Friedman ended her presentation with a call to action to the students, “More than your applause, I need your memory.”
