On Memorial Day, our beloved Firehouse Dog, Lola had her first seizure that lasted about 15 seconds. Throughout the week she was fine, just sleepy. On Saturday morning she had her second seizure and was rushed to the emergency vet because she wasn’t coming out of it as quickly. Blood tests were ran and she was diagnosed with epilepsy and went home. Later that same day at 4pm she had another seizure that lasted around 50 seconds. During that time she stopped breathing. After her seizure she was coughing up blood and had a hard time breathing. She was rushed back to VCA with a couple episodes where she stopped breathing on the car ride there.
After she arrived back at the vet they put her in an oxygen chamber at 80% oxygen and did chest X-rays. At that time she was diagnosed with non cardiogenic pulmonary edema secondary to the seizure. The lower 1/3 of her lungs were filled with blood.
She stayed the night in the oxygen chamber and was able to be discharged home Sunday night with improvement to the fluid in her lungs. Over the next few days the fluid should be absorbed back into her body. She is now on a seizure medication twice a day that she will be on for the rest of her life. She is still adjusting to this medication as it is a central nervous system depressant. Hopefully in a few weeks she will be back to herself!
To assist with the unexpected medical bills that Lola's caregiver is facing, we have a Go Fund Me fundraiser going to help out & we appreciate every single dollar that is being donated. If you're able to help out, please consider to do so through this link:
