The New Providence Police Department is saddened to learn of the passing of Retired New Providence School Crossing Guard David Smozanek. David was a long time New Providence resident and retired City of Summit Fire Fighter.

David was a School Crossing Guard with our agency for 13 years. He was assigned to the crossing post at South St and High St for 10 years before becoming a substitute guard, covering various posts. David retired from his crossing duties in 2021 at the age of 83 years old!

We’d like to express our deepest condolences to his family and are thankful for the many years of service he provided our agency, and the Borough’s school children.

We would like to give an enormous thank you to Bradley Funeral Homes! This afternoon Bradley treated public safety agencies from Summit and New Providence to lunch from Avellinos Wood Fired Pizza! It was a great afternoon being able to get together with one another and enjoy a delicious lunch!

This morning members of Summit Fire, PD and EMS participated in a stair climb, with each member climbing 110 stories to honor those lost on 9/11. This yearly tradition would not be possible if it weren’t for Equinox! Thank you for your support again this year!

Congratulations to Firefighter Lou Vecchia on completing his final shift with SFD! After 25 years of service to the City of Summit, Lou has officially retired. Please join us in wishing Lou a happy, healthy and safe retirement!

The Summit Fire Department would like to congratulate Lieutenant Joe Moschello on his well earned retirement! Lieutenant Moschello served the City of Summit for 17 years providing invaluable expertise in both Fire Protection and structural firefighting. Please join us in congratulating Joe and wishing him well in his future endeavors!

The Summit Fire Department would like to congratulate our medical director, Dr. Matthew Letizia on the honor of receiving the National EMS Medical Director of the year award! Dr. Letizia provides our department with critical medical direction so that we can best serve the residents of Summit. Congratulations, Doc!

One of many incidents A platoon is handling this afternoon. Thus far the shift has answered 40 calls for service since 8am. We are diligently trying to help residents with any needs they have after last nights storm!

Our hearts go out to the Newark Fire Department this morning. Please keep their members and the families of the two firefighters who sacrificed it all last night in your thoughts and prayers during this incredibly difficult time. We also want to wish a speedy recovery to those injured during the fire.

A little truck company maintenance today. The new firehouse will allow us to work on our trucks inside during inclement weather.

This morning SFD happily hosted and their K9s in training! Soon these pups will be working full time to detect various different items and help keep our streets safe. Thank you for stopping by!

Throughout this week members are practicing “Pick Off” training. This evolution simulates lowering a firefighter from a high point in order to rescue a victim trapped at a window. Great teamwork by all involved!
