Sumrall Police Department Press Release
On October 29, 2025, at approximately 2132 hours, Officer Lee Davis made a traffic stop on a Kia Sportage driven by Deja Owens for no taillights. When Officer Davis made contact with the driver, there was a strong smell of ma*****na coming from the vehicle. Owens admitted to smoking ma*****na earlier in the day along with her passenger, Velton Sims. There was also a two-year-old baby in the back seat, who was unrestrained. At this time, Officer Bounds and Parkman showed up to assist with the traffic stop. The driver and the passenger were asked to exit the vehicle. A search of the passenger, Sims, revealed a small bag of a green leafy substance that appeared to be ma*****na in his pocket. A probable cause search of the vehicle revealed a yellow dollar general bag on the back floorboard of the driver's side. Inside the yellow bag were four vacuum-sealed bags containing a transparent crystalline substance believed to be crystal m**h. The crystal-like substance was field tested and tested positive for m**hamphetamine. The total weight of the m**h was four pounds and three ounces, with a street value of over 30,000.00 dollars. The driver, Owens, and the passenger, Sims, were both arrested and charged with aggravated trafficking of a schedule II drug and felony child abuse. The dedication of these officers and their determination to keep the town of Sumrall safe go above and beyond the call of duty. The Town of Sumrall will continue to strictly enforce traffic laws with a focus on impaired driving and narcotics violations. Our goal is to keep our community safe.
