Sumter Opera House

Sumter Opera House The mission of the Sumter Opera House is to enrich the cultural lives of our community, neighbors, and visitors by providing diverse creative experiences.

The Sumter Opera House is a beautiful historic site with a rich past. Completed in 1895, it has served as an opera house, a music academy, a movie theatre, city offices, a meat market, barber shop, and even a jail. Still home to City Hall, many city departments and City Council chambers, the Sumter Opera House is once again presenting a performance series in an effort to contribute to downtown rev

italization. The 550-seat theatre boasts excellent acoustics, a proscenium decorated with Art Deco gold-leaf, and provides the perfect intimate venue to see your favorite artists. Check out the event schedule and make plans now to attend a performance inside the Sumter Opera House!

Your Voice Can Shape the Future of the Sumter Opera House

The Sumter Opera House is preparing for its grand reopening after closing for renovations in June 2025. While construction is nearing completion, we want to hear from the people who will enjoy the venue in the future, including those who may not be familiar with the Opera House today.

We are launching a short community survey and invite all Sumter residents to participate. The survey takes about five minutes to complete. Your feedback on entertainment, advertising, and how the Sumter Opera House communicates with the community will help shape its future and better serve our residents.

Now Hiring: Theater Services Coordinator 📣

We’re looking for a Theater Services Coordinator who can keep events running smoothly with a calm approach, an eye for detail, and just a subtle hint of that Martin Short in Father of the Bride energy. 😉

- Oversee concessions and box office operations, including inventory, ticketing, and troubleshooting when things inevitably glitch
- Coordinate front-of-house staff and volunteers, ensuring everyone is in place and ready to go
- Serve as the go-to problem solver for staff, clients, and guests (yes, even mid-show)
- Keep all events running smoothly while handling last-minute requests, surprises, and the occasional curveball with professionalism

What we're looking for:
- Strong organization and communication skills
- Ability to handle multiple tasks in a fast-paced environment
- Experience in events, theater, or hospitality is a plus

If you enjoy creating seamless experiences and keeping everything on track, even when things get a little theatrical, we’d love to hear from you. 🎭

The relationship between artist and audience is undeniable. When you have the chance to settle into the music, it might dawn on you that that particular evening of live performance can never be replicated again. It's paths crossing for a singular moment in time to experience something greater.

Thanks to our friend, Nicholas Edward Williams, for reminding us of this. This night of music embodied the goal and intentionality behind our Acoustic Café concert series. Should we keep it going next season?!
