June is PTSD Awareness Month.

At Sumter County EMS, we recognize that the calls may end, but for many first responders, the impact can last far beyond the sirens. Behind every uniform is a human being carrying experiences most people will never see.

This month, we stand with every EMT, paramedic, dispatcher, firefighter, law enforcement officer, healthcare worker, veteran, and community member facing the invisible weight of trauma.

Let’s continue breaking the silence surrounding mental health and create a culture where support, compassion, and healing are just as important as the job itself.

🌧️ Rain or Shine, We Train. 🚑

Today, our in-house EMT Academy trainees took cardiac arrest training outside and into the rain — because emergencies don’t wait for perfect conditions, and neither do we. From CPR and airway management to teamwork and scene coordination, these future EMS professionals pushed through the elements to sharpen the skills that save lives.

At Sumter County EMS, we believe preparation happens in real-world environments. The weather may have been rough, but the dedication and determination from our trainees never slowed down.

****EMT Academy****

We are growing our workforce again!!!!! We are looking to add two additional ambulances to each shift in our upcoming budget year and are looking to add a combination of certified employees and EMT Academy students!
Are you looking to start a career in EMS? Sumter County EMS is hosting an EMT Academy interest meeting on June 9, 2026 at 6pm at our training location 131 East Hampton Ave Sumter, SC 29150. These are 40 hour a week courses, where you are hired full-time as a student for the duration of the program. All our EMT Academy courses are run through Central Carolina Technical College. Once certified you will transition to shift work. If interested please reach out to get on the list for the meeting. 803-436-2415 ask for Chelsie. Even if you had previously inquired, we ask that you contact Chelsie so we can update your information. Looking forward to another great Academy!!!!

At Stadium Road EMS Station groundbreaking on May 15, Kent Hall, director of Sumter County EMS, said EMS administration and county council have been for three years drafting a bigger vision for the agency.

Friday's groundbreaking was step one of "implementing our vision to better serve the community," he said.

"As public safety professionals, our goal is to do what we can to serve the community to the best of our ability. By adding facilities, adding equipment, resources, apparatus and personnel, that helps us better provide that service to our citizens and our visitors."

This week is EMS Week and I am so blessed to work alongside the men and women of Sumter County EMS! We have some of the hardest working people in the profession and the sacrifices that they make to serve our community is huge. They have worked hard to build our department and improve the quality of care for our patients. Please keep them in your thoughts this week as we celebrate their commitment, compassion and service to our community. I am so thankful and honored to serve with each of you.
