🏛️ On January 14, 2026, the South Carolina House of Representatives passed Resolution 4880 declaring February 22, 2026, as "Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women Justice and Awareness Day" in the state.

📜 The resolution acknowledges that "indigenous women experience disproportionately high rates of violence, abduction, and homicide, with many cases going unsolved or under-investigated due to systemic barriers, gaps in jurisdiction, and a historical lack of awareness".

👗 The red dress has become a powerful national symbol representing the thousands of indigenous women and girls who are missing or murdered. The resolution encourages citizens to display red, wear red dresses, and participate in awareness events to elevate understanding of the crisis.

🗣️ The South Carolina House affirms its commitment to working with tribal nations, advocates, and federal partners to support initiatives addressing MMIW, human trafficking, and systemic inequities impacting indigenous women and girls. A state resolution. A red dress. A promise to do better. Words are only the beginning.

The Medicine Pouch
The small medicine pouch looked ordinary to outsiders.
Worn leather.
Faded stitching.
A few old beads darkened by time.

But the elder carried it through every hardship of his life.
