Join us on Saturday, September 12 at 2:00 p.m. in the Community Room for a special talk by Dr. Pao Lor. 🎤

Drawing on his lived experience, Dr. Pao Lor offers insight into how the Hmong people moved from an intricate, sophisticated, and vulnerable culture in the isolated highlands of Laos in the 1960s and 1970s to becoming part of the American and global landscape. He frames the Hmong American journey through five pillars: An Ancient Culture; American Allies; Refugees; American Neighbors and Citizens; and the Transformation of an Ancient Culture. While his memoirs—Modern Jungles and Bamboo Son—may appear at first to be adventurous and deeply personal narratives, they ultimately trace his passage through centuries of human civilization and collective memory. His story becomes not only a Hmong story, but a shared human one. Audiences are invited to engage in dialogue with Dr. Lor around broader societal challenges, including immigration, forced migration, diversity, globalization, refugees, and displaced peoples.

The first 20 attendees will receive a free copy of Dr. Pao's book, Bamboo Son: A Hmong Refugee's Search for Identity and the American Dream. 🎉📖

125 years ago today, the Sun Prairie Free Library opened to the community. What began as a bookshelf in City Hall with just over 200 books, has now become the beautiful, state of the art building that is the Sun Prairie Public Library of today, visited by thousands each month. Although we have grown - in building size, staff and collection size, to name a few - at our core we are still the same as we were when we started: devoted to promoting lifelong learning and literacy to the public.

We wouldn't be where we are now without you, our community - our visitors, our volunteers, our donors, and all the other stakeholders who have and continue to advocate for library services in our rapidly growing city.

What we would really love for our birthday is for you to recommend us to others! Tell your friends to come get a library card! It only takes a couple minutes and will connect you to a world of free materials, services and programs. Stop in or visit https://www.sunprairiepubliclibrary.org/get-library-card to apply online.

Stop by the library's Atrium now through September 8 to view a special exhibit, After Jackie: Breaking Barriers - 25 Years of Tribute; 60 Stories Untold.

This exhibit is an immersive educational experience that explores the complete history of Black baseball—from the earliest pioneers of the late 1800s through the Negro Leagues and into the lasting impact of integration. The exhibit highlights stories that are often omitted from traditional historical narratives and preserves the legacy of the athletes who transformed America's pastime. ⚾

Then on Tuesday, September 8 at 5:30PM in the Community Room, join us for a special talk with former Negro League professional baseball player, Dennis Biddle!

Dennis Biddle is one of the last living Negro League players and a nationally recognized advocate for preserving Negro League history. He is the President of Yesterday's Negro League Baseball Players Foundation and author of the book, Secrets of the Negro Baseball League.

During his talk, Dennis Biddle will share personal stories from the Negro Leagues and speak about his foundation's 25 years of advocacy. An audience Q&A will follow, and attendees will also have an opportunity to meet Dennis. Copies of his book will be available for purchase, and attendees may have their copies signed.

Join us virtually next week Tuesday, September 1 at 1:00 PM for a chat with award-winning historian David O. Stewart about his newest work, The Democracy We Must Keep, and the question he explores throughout the book: What did America's founders say about democracy, and can we remain true to their vision for America? As the United States celebrates its 250th anniversary, The Democracy We Must Keep urges readers to rediscover core ideas that built the nation—and to consider what it will take to protect them.
