Municipal Electric Utilities of Wisconsin (MEUW) is the state association representing the interests of Wisconsin’s locally owned, locally controlled municipal electric utilities. The association has been providing service, advocacy and safety initiatives to municipal electric utilities in Wisconsin since 1928. MEUW's 82 member communities range in size from Manitowoc with a population of 33,750,

to Merrillan with a population of 539. Collectively, these public power utilities distribute over 11 percent of the electricity in Wisconsin and most have roots going back close to a century or more. Municipal utilities are operated on a not-for-profit basis, and overseen by a local governing board composed of local citizens and elected officials. They are dedicated to providing low-cost, reliable electricity to their citizens, farms, businesses and industries. As a part of our mission MEUW strives to unify and serve as a common voice for municipal utilities and to provide them with the support they need to be able to improve service to their customers and community.

Two weeks ago today, an EF-3 tornado tore through Menasha, leaving behind a mile-wide path of destruction.

Within hours, our team began coordinating crews to help restore power and support the community’s recovery.
— 120 poles replaced
— More than 100 lineworkers
— 25 responding municipal utilities

Crews worked safely and tirelessly to reconnect electric service to every home that could receive it.

While we never hope for an event like this, responding to emergencies is an essential part of what we do. Coordinating emergency mutual aid is one of the ways we support our state's 81 municipal utilities — and it’s a powerful reminder of what can be accomplished when neighbors help neighbors.

A heartfelt thank you to every utility that answered the call, sent crews, equipment or supplies, and to everyone who helped in other ways. We are proud of the unified response to help Menasha Utilities get back on its feet. This is at its best.

Crews from 16 public power utilities are in Menasha helping with storm recovery. Due to the scope of the damage and the significant debris blocking roads and access to infrastructure, additional crews are not needed at this time. After 44 years of dedicated service to electric line work, Randy Larson is heading into a well-deserved retirement. His passion for training and keeping lineworkers safe is truly unmatched in Wisconsin. We've been happy to have his expertise on the MEUW team since 2018 and wish him all the best. It’s and we’re sharing the reminder that safe actions save lives! Every year, more than 100,000 crashes occur in work zones. Let’s keep roadside utility work crews and each other safe. Your actions behind the wheel can be forever. When you see the orange cones, it’s a sign to put down the phone and slow down. Because everyone deserves to make it home.
