SUNAPEE FIRE DEPARTMENT PRESS/MEDIA RELEASE

INCIDENT TYPE: 1st Alarm Building Fire
INCIDENT DATE: 5/23/2026
INCIDENT TIME: 22:12
INCIDENT LOCATION: Lake Ave - Sunapee
SUNAPEE APPARATUS ON SCENE: Engine 2
INCIDENT COMMANDER: Lieutenant Timothy White

On Saturday, May 23rd, 2026 at 22:12, the Sunapee Fire Department, along with mutual aid from New London and Springfield, were dispatched to a residence on Lake Avenue in Sunapee for a reported smoke condition inside a residence.

While fire personnel were still responding to the station, officers from the Sunapee Police Department arrived on scene at 22:14 and advised responding units of a visible smoke condition inside the residence along with a strong odor of smoke. Due to these initial reports, additional mutual aid resources including Newport Ladder 3 and Croydon Tanker 2 were requested.

Sunapee Engine 2 arrived on scene at 22:20 and reported nothing showing from the exterior of a large two-story wood-frame residence. However, upon making entry, Sunapee Fire personnel confirmed a moderate smoke condition and odor inside the home. Firefighters immediately began investigating the source while mutual aid companies continued to the scene.

Sunapee Fire was assisted on scene by New London Engine 1, Springfield Tanker 1, Newport Ladder 3, Croydon Tanker 2, and New London Ambulance 4.

After a thorough investigation, fire personnel determined the cause of the smoke to be an issue with the home’s HVAC system. Once the source was identified, the incident was declared under control at 22:45, and crews began ventilating the residence to remove the smoke and odor.

All Sunapee Fire and mutual aid units cleared the scene at 23:13.

This incident highlights the importance of having properly working smoke and carbon monoxide detectors in your home, as well as the importance of evacuating quickly anytime there is a possible emergency.

It also demonstrates the critical role mutual aid plays in protecting our community.

As a primarily on-call (volunteer) fire department, and with this incident occurring during a holiday weekend, the Sunapee Fire Department only had six personnel available to respond. Strong relationships with our surrounding mutual aid departments are essential to ensuring the highest level of service to the residents and visitors of Sunapee.

We would like to sincerely thank New London, Springfield, Newport, Croydon, and New London Ambulance for their assistance last night.

SUNAPEE FIRE DEPARTMENT PRESS/MEDIA RELEASE

INCIDENT TYPE: Brush Fire
INCIDENT DATE: 5/21/2026
INCIDENT TIME: 12:55
INCIDENT LOCATION: Interstate 89
SUNAPEE APPARATUS ON SCENE: Forestry 6, Tanker 4
INCIDENT COMMANDER: Lieutenant Timothy White

On Thursday, May 21st, 2026 at 12:55 PM, the Sunapee Fire Department, along with mutual aid from the New London Fire Department, was dispatched to Interstate 89 for a reported brush fire in the median.

Due to New London Dispatch receiving multiple and conflicting location reports regarding the exact location of the fire, both Sunapee Fire and New London Fire were toned to ensure a rapid response.

Sunapee Forestry 6 arrived on scene at 1:06 PM and located an approximately 30x30 area actively burning in the median near the Sunapee/Springfield town line. Forestry 6’s crew quickly deployed a hose line and began extinguishment efforts. Crews from the New London Fire Department continued to the scene to assist with final extinguishment operations.

The fire was declared under control at 1:12 PM. Crews remained on scene extinguishing hot spots and checking the surrounding area to ensure no further fire spread. All units cleared the scene at approximately 1:30 PM.

Immediately after clearing the brush fire, Sunapee Fire units were toned to a medical emergency in Georges Mills.

At the time of this writing, the Sunapee Fire Department has responded to three calls for service today (5/21/26) within the Town of Sunapee, including two medical emergencies and this brush fire incident.

We would like to recognize and thank all of our members for their continued commitment, dedication, and willingness to answer the call to serve the residents and visitors of Sunapee — no matter the time or circumstance.

On Tuesday, May 19th, members of the Sunapee Fire Department conducted department training focused on First Due Operations. “First Due” refers to the firefighters and apparatus that are first to arrive on the scene of an emergency and are responsible for quickly assessing the situation, establishing priorities, and beginning critical emergency operations.

During the training, members practiced responding to different types of emergency incidents, pulling hose lines, and flowing water to strengthen operational readiness and teamwork. Firefighters trained with Rescue 1, Engine 2, and Tanker 4 while working through realistic scenarios designed to prepare crews for the wide range of emergencies we respond to throughout the community.

During the training, Sunapee Fire was also dispatched to a motor vehicle collision on Route 11 near Trow Hill, highlighting the importance of maintaining preparedness and being ready to respond at a moment’s notice.

A special thank you to Abbott Library for allowing us to utilize their parking lots for training. We greatly appreciate the continued support from our community partners!

SUNAPEE FIRE DEPARTMENT PRESS/MEDIA RELEASE

INCIDENT TYPE: 1st Alarm Structure Fire
INCIDENT DATE: 5/19/2026
INCIDENT TIME: 08:25
INCIDENT LOCATION: Birch Point Road
SUNAPEE APPARATUS ON SCENE: Car 1, Engine 2, Tanker 4
INCIDENT COMMANDER: Lieutenant Timothy White

On Tuesday, May 19th, 2026, at 08:25, the Sunapee Fire Department was dispatched to an address on Birch Point Road in Sunapee for a reported possible building fire with smoke inside the residence. Mutual aid was requested from the New London, Newport, and Springfield Fire Departments.

Sunapee Car 1 arrived on scene at 08:32 and reported a two-story wood-frame residence with nothing showing from two sides and confirmed that all occupants had safely evacuated the home. Lieutenant Timothy White established Birch Point Command and completed a 360-degree size-up of the structure. While no visible fire or smoke was observed from the exterior, a light smoke condition was identified inside the residence, and the fire alarm system was actively sounding.

Sunapee Engine 2 and Tanker 4 arrived shortly thereafter, and crews made entry into the residence to investigate the source of the smoke condition. Firefighters quickly determined the issue to be related to a malfunction involving the home’s furnace/boiler system, which had caused smoke to accumulate inside the structure.

New London Engine 1 continued to the scene to assist Sunapee crews with ventilation operations, while all other mutual aid units were canceled prior to arrival.

The incident was placed under control at 08:45, and all units cleared the scene at 09:05.

The Sunapee Fire Department would like to remind residents that if smoke or an odor of smoke is present inside your home and the cause is unknown, immediately evacuate and call 911 from a safe location.
