SUNAPEE FIRE DEPARTMENT PRESS/MEDIA RELEASE
INCIDENT TYPE: 1st Alarm Building Fire
INCIDENT DATE: 5/23/2026
INCIDENT TIME: 22:12
INCIDENT LOCATION: Lake Ave - Sunapee
SUNAPEE APPARATUS ON SCENE: Engine 2
INCIDENT COMMANDER: Lieutenant Timothy White
On Saturday, May 23rd, 2026 at 22:12, the Sunapee Fire Department, along with mutual aid from New London and Springfield, were dispatched to a residence on Lake Avenue in Sunapee for a reported smoke condition inside a residence.
While fire personnel were still responding to the station, officers from the Sunapee Police Department arrived on scene at 22:14 and advised responding units of a visible smoke condition inside the residence along with a strong odor of smoke. Due to these initial reports, additional mutual aid resources including Newport Ladder 3 and Croydon Tanker 2 were requested.
Sunapee Engine 2 arrived on scene at 22:20 and reported nothing showing from the exterior of a large two-story wood-frame residence. However, upon making entry, Sunapee Fire personnel confirmed a moderate smoke condition and odor inside the home. Firefighters immediately began investigating the source while mutual aid companies continued to the scene.
Sunapee Fire was assisted on scene by New London Engine 1, Springfield Tanker 1, Newport Ladder 3, Croydon Tanker 2, and New London Ambulance 4.
After a thorough investigation, fire personnel determined the cause of the smoke to be an issue with the home’s HVAC system. Once the source was identified, the incident was declared under control at 22:45, and crews began ventilating the residence to remove the smoke and odor.
All Sunapee Fire and mutual aid units cleared the scene at 23:13.
This incident highlights the importance of having properly working smoke and carbon monoxide detectors in your home, as well as the importance of evacuating quickly anytime there is a possible emergency.
It also demonstrates the critical role mutual aid plays in protecting our community.
As a primarily on-call (volunteer) fire department, and with this incident occurring during a holiday weekend, the Sunapee Fire Department only had six personnel available to respond. Strong relationships with our surrounding mutual aid departments are essential to ensuring the highest level of service to the residents and visitors of Sunapee.
We would like to sincerely thank New London, Springfield, Newport, Croydon, and New London Ambulance for their assistance last night.
