Abbott Library hosts Dr. Eric Boyer for his presentation on "One Land, Two Nations: A Political History or the Israeli-Palestinian Conflict" on Tuesday, July 7th, at 5:30 PM.

To understand the headlines of today, one must first navigate the layered history of the last century. This talk serves as a comprehensive primer on the Israeli-Palestinian conflict, tracing its evolution from the rise of political Zionism in 1897 through the transformative events of October 7. Rather than viewing the struggle as an intractable religious feud, this presentation frames the conflict as a modern political struggle over land, sovereignty, and national identity.

Dr. Eric Boyer will examine the pivotal moments that shaped the current landscape—including the British Mandate, the 1948 and 1967 wars, and the Oslo Accords—to see how past decisions have narrowed or defined the paths available today. By exploring how two distinct nations came to claim the same territory, attendees will gain a clearer understanding of the historical drivers behind the current crisis and the complex hurdles standing in the way of a lasting solution.

Join us next week for our next program in our US's 250th celebration at 5:30 PM for "Portraits of a Revolution".

"Portraits of a Revolution" explores American portraits painted and sculpted during the years leading up to, and the decades after, the Revolution. The ideals, values and virtues expressly stated in the founding documents are easily identifiable in these portraits once we know how to “read” them. Join Abbott Library as we host Inez McDermott on Monday, June 22nd at 5 PM.
Inez McDermott will examine portraits of founding “fathers” and “mothers,” as well as of lesser-known individuals, as documents that can be read like texts. She will also discuss the tradition of portraiture, and the influences of earlier art movements, artists, and artifacts, that inform these American portraits. Inez will introduce the audience to, and practice, some skills of art analysis and learn how art works can reveal so much about a culture.
Inez McDermott has been teaching art history and curating art and history exhibitions in New Hampshire since 1986. In her classes and research she explores the ways that art can play a role in social engagement, participatory democracy, and activism. Her specific research interests focus on historical and contemporary New Hampshire art and artists, with a particular focus on 19th-century photography.

Register for our first crafternoon for the summer reading season. Miss Molly has a fun afternoon of dinosaur creations planned for our youth! This is open to all ages - Kids and teens will use colorful air dry modeling clay to mold a dinosaur around a plastic dinosaur skeleton.

America celebrates 250 years since the Declaration of Independence was adopted on July 4, 1776.

Abbott Library will be observing the holiday on July 3rd and 4th this year - closing the library. You can help support the library by visiting The Friends of the Abbott Library's Pancake Breakfast from 7 - 10 AM at the Safety Services Building AND the Abbott Library's Board of Trustees' Book Sale from 8 AM - 1 PM at Sherburne Gym.

Abbott Library's "Unearth a Story" summer reading program hosts Vermont Museum of Natural History on July 10th at 4:30 PM.

Travel back in time to when giant dinosaurs wandered our earth and mysterious creatures lurked in our ocean. These charismatic mega-fauna may have taken up the most space on our planet, but this program will unearth some of the oldest plants and animals that thrived Among Dinosaurs. With the help of some of the Vermont Museum of Natural History's animal ambassadors, we'll delve into extinct prehistoric mammals, ancient ocean invertebrates, fossils, both living and long-gone, and more.
