SUNAPEE FIRE DEPARTMENT PRESS/MEDIA RELEASE

INCIDENT TYPE: 1st Alarm Structure Fire
INCIDENT DATE: 5/19/2026
INCIDENT TIME: 08:25
INCIDENT LOCATION: Birch Point Road
SUNAPEE APPARATUS ON SCENE: Car 1, Engine 2, Tanker 4
INCIDENT COMMANDER: Lieutenant Timothy White

On Tuesday, May 19th, 2026, at 08:25, the Sunapee Fire Department was dispatched to an address on Birch Point Road in Sunapee for a reported possible building fire with smoke inside the residence. Mutual aid was requested from the New London, Newport, and Springfield Fire Departments.

Sunapee Car 1 arrived on scene at 08:32 and reported a two-story wood-frame residence with nothing showing from two sides and confirmed that all occupants had safely evacuated the home. Lieutenant Timothy White established Birch Point Command and completed a 360-degree size-up of the structure. While no visible fire or smoke was observed from the exterior, a light smoke condition was identified inside the residence, and the fire alarm system was actively sounding.

Sunapee Engine 2 and Tanker 4 arrived shortly thereafter, and crews made entry into the residence to investigate the source of the smoke condition. Firefighters quickly determined the issue to be related to a malfunction involving the home’s furnace/boiler system, which had caused smoke to accumulate inside the structure.

New London Engine 1 continued to the scene to assist Sunapee crews with ventilation operations, while all other mutual aid units were canceled prior to arrival.

The incident was placed under control at 08:45, and all units cleared the scene at 09:05.

The Sunapee Fire Department would like to remind residents that if smoke or an odor of smoke is present inside your home and the cause is unknown, immediately evacuate and call 911 from a safe location.

04/29/2026

Interagency training between the Sunapee Fire Department, Sunapee Police Department, and Newbury Fire Department is essential to maintaining a high level of readiness for the community. Emergencies—especially complex or large-scale incidents—rarely involve just one agency. By training together, these departments build strong working relationships, improve communication, and ensure that everyone understands each other’s roles and responsibilities on scene.

Joint training allows personnel to practice unified command, coordinate tactics, and operate seamlessly during high-stress situations such as structure fires, medical emergencies, or active threat incidents. It also helps identify potential gaps in response before a real emergency occurs, ultimately making operations safer and more effective.

Most importantly, this collaboration directly benefits the residents and visitors of Sunapee and Newbury. When agencies train together, they respond together—faster, smarter, and more efficiently—ensuring the best possible outcome when seconds count.

Sunapee Fire Department Training Announcement

On the evening of Tuesday, April 28th, the Sunapee Fire Department conducted a critical joint training focused on active shooter response, Tactical Rescue Team (TRT) operations, and the establishment of a Unified Command structure during large-scale incidents. The training was held in collaboration with Sunapee Police Department Sergeant Nick Boisvert and included personnel from the Newbury Fire Department.

This training emphasized the coordination required between fire, EMS, and law enforcement during high-threat, rapidly evolving incidents. Firefighters and EMS providers worked alongside law enforcement to develop and refine their roles within Tactical Rescue Teams—operating in the “warm zone” under police protection to provide immediate medical care and facilitate rapid patient extraction.

A key component of the training was the implementation of Unified Command. Participants practiced establishing a cohesive command structure that integrates both fire and police leadership, ensuring clear communication, shared objectives, and efficient resource management during complex incidents. Scenarios highlighted the importance of coordinated decision-making, situational awareness, and interoperability between agencies.

The participation of Newbury Fire personnel further strengthened mutual aid relationships and reinforced the importance of regional collaboration when responding to large-scale emergencies.

This training reflects the Sunapee Fire Department’s continued commitment to preparedness, interagency cooperation, and delivering the highest level of service to the community. By training together in realistic scenarios, responders are better equipped to operate effectively and safely when faced with critical incidents.

Sunapee Fire Department Public Notice
High Fire Danger Remains – No Outside Burning Permitted
April 27, 2026

The Sunapee Fire Department would like to remind residents and visitors that fire danger remains HIGH today, April 27, 2026. Due to the continued elevated wildfire risk, all outside burning remains prohibited within the Town of Sunapee until further notice.

Dry conditions, low humidity, and wind can allow even a small fire to spread rapidly, creating dangerous conditions for homes, woods, and surrounding properties.

Yesterday, Sunapee Fire responded to multiple illegal outside burns within the Town of Sunapee. One of those fires was first spotted and reported by the Mount Cardigan Fire Tower, located in Orange, New Hampshire. As shown in the attached photo from the tower, visibility from the lookout allows observers to monitor smoke and fire activity across a wide region.

The individual staffing the fire tower was able to accurately triangulate the smoke column to an address in Sunapee. When Sunapee Fire units responded to the area, firefighters located an active fire within approximately 50 yards of the address provided. This was outstanding work and an excellent example of how early detection and skilled reporting can help protect surrounding communities.

The Sunapee Fire Department would like to thank the person staffing the Mount Cardigan Fire Tower for their professionalism, vigilance, and assistance.

The public is reminded that if you see any signs of smoke or fire, call 911 immediately. Early notification allows emergency crews to respond quickly and can prevent a small fire from becoming a major incident.

We appreciate everyone’s cooperation as we work together to keep Sunapee safe.

Sunapee Fire Department Conducting Annual Pump Testing in Sunapee Harbor

Today, Thursday, April 23, the Sunapee Fire Department will be conducting annual fire apparatus pump testing in the Sunapee Harbor area. Testing and certification services will be performed by Lakes Regions Fire Apparatus to ensure all department pumping equipment meets required performance and safety standards.

Pump testing is a critical part of fire apparatus maintenance and operational readiness. During the testing process, each fire truck’s pump is evaluated under a variety of operating conditions to confirm it can deliver the proper water flow and pressure needed during emergency incidents. This includes verifying suction capability, pressure consistency, valve operation, and overall pump reliability.

Routine pump certification helps ensure that when firefighters respond to structure fires, brush fires, vehicle fires, or other emergencies, their equipment will perform exactly as expected. Reliable pumping systems are essential for supplying handlines, master streams, tanker shuttle operations, and mutual aid incidents where dependable water movement can make a significant difference in operations.

The Sunapee Fire Department appreciates the community’s patience during today’s testing activities in the Harbor area. Residents and visitors may notice fire apparatus operating near the water, drafting hose setups, and temporary traffic impacts as crews complete this important annual maintenance process.

Maintaining equipment through regular inspections and testing is another way the Sunapee Fire Department remains prepared to serve and protect the community.
