Spotting the signs
Child abuse in small towns

April marks Child Abuse Awareness and Prevention Month, a time dedicated to recognizing the realities of child abuse, supporting families and educating communities on how to protect children.
For Jewel Parrish, the work is both urgent and deeply rooted in community awareness. As executive director of Child Advocacy Centers of Wyoming, Parrish helps oversee services aimed at supporting children and families across the state — including those in rural areas like Weston County.

There is a difference between not understanding the child welfare crisis—and fully seeing it, yet refusing to change course.

Children left in circumstances such as on a boat or in a tent with active addiction is not an abstract policy debate. This is is the real-world consequence of decisions made by leaders who were warned that current laws leave children exposed to dangerous, preventable harm.

When laws fail to protect children, and those failures become visible, the responsible response is not defensiveness—it is course correction.

This is not about assigning blame for the sake of blame. It is about having the courage to admit when outcomes are unacceptable and being willing to fix what is not working.

Children cannot wait for politics, pride, or ideology to catch up. Their safety, their rights, and their well-being must come first—always.

If you see the harm and still refuse to help change it, then you are no longer separate from the problem—you are helping sustain it.

During Child Abuse Prevention Month, let’s remember: protecting children requires action, not excuses.
