ARMY Service Members and Sunland Park Police Officers and Firemen hit the hardwood for a good cause Friday evening during the Basketball Game/Canned Food Drive.

Held at the Santa Teresa Middle School gym, the charity basketball game benefits the Sunland Park Fire Department’s food- and meal-assistance initiatives. A donation of one canned good served as the price of admission to Friday’s game.

The charity event promotes a positive community relationship. This helps to bridge the gap between the community and police. It shows kids that police are not here to hurt them. They are here to help them in more ways than one. This is community policing. This is an opportunity to show kids that we are humans, too.

The ARMY won the basketball game, scoring 69 points to the Police Department/Fire Department's 60 points.
A special thank you goes to all that made this possible.

These are the ideal ages for kids to benefit from the generous donation of Santa Teresa Motor Sports. We are searching for kids that have landed in less than fortunate circumstances. Thank you to Santa Teresa Motor Sports, 910 Livingston Dr, Santa Teresa NM 88008 (575) 589-4980) for looking out for children in need and by letting them know there are people that care about them!

For a second day in a row, SPPD has investigated four seperate vehicle crashes. We would like to remind you that roadway work zones are hazardous, both for workers and motorists who drive through the complex array of signs, barrels and lane changes. Please keep the following tips in mind when driving through work zones:

•Slow down and always follow posted work zone speed limits. Speeding is one of the major causes of work zone crashes.

•Pay attention. Workers and heavy equipment may only be a few feet from passing vehicles.

•Don’t tailgate.

•Stay alert and minimize distractions such as cell phones.

•Obey road crew flaggers;

•Expect the unexpected. Delays from roadway construction can be frustrating, but it only takes a few extra minutes to slow down for a work zone.

•Plan ahead. Leave a few minutes early when traveling through a work zone in order to reach your destination on time.
