Founded in 1970, Sunnyvale Community Services is an independent, nonprofit emergency assistance agency. Our mission is to prevent homelessness and hunger for low-income families and seniors facing temporary crises. We provide financial aid, food, and other support that prevents larger problems with more expensive solutions. Sunnyvale Community Services helps families and individuals living in Sunnyvale, CA who are in need of emergency aid. With rents increasing and food prices going up, the need is greater than ever. Here’s a number worth paying attention to: 10x.

That’s how much more it can cost to deal with a homelessness incident than to prevent one in the first place.

That message was part of the conversation as Sunnyvale City Council unanimously adopted its new five-year Homelessness Response Plan last week, establishing prevention, temporary housing and community outreach as its three priorities.
As SCS Executive Director Marie Bernard told City leaders, keeping people housed before they fall into homelessness is not only the compassionate choice; it’s the fiscally responsible one.
SCS is the local front door to the region’s Homelessness Prevention System. Last year alone, we served 326 households, and 98% remained housed a year later.
Because the best time to address homelessness?
Before it happens.

Here's how YOU can be part of the force that prevents homelessness and hunger in our community. 👥💙 If you’re from the Bay Area, get involved by volunteering with us at Sunnyvale Community Services! There are opportunities for volunteers of all ages and interests, including food distribution, deliveries to home-bound seniors, food sorting, and more. We rely on assistance from individuals, student volunteers, faith-based groups, corporate volunteers, family night programs, community leader programs, and many others to do the important work of helping our neighbors in need.

For three decades, she has helped neighbors in need with compassion, reliability, and heart. Last week, we celebrated our 3rd annual Leslie Lawton Legacy Society & SCS Sustainers Club luncheon! ✨ Invitees enjoyed a delicious lunch, got their sustainer’s club pins, and saw a preview of SCS’s upcoming events ✨🥳

Leslie Lawton was a beloved former board member who poured her heart into bringing warmth, hope, and care to our Sunnyvale community. In remembering her legacy, SCS created the Leslie Lawton Legacy Society, honoring those who have made a lasting commitment to our mission by pledging support through planned gifts and donations. 💗We also gave our thanks to the 160 members of our SCS sustainers club, those who committed to donating $40 or more every month. Invitees enjoyed a filling, delicious meal thanks to our friends at JW catering ! 🍽️💙

During the luncheon, we acknowledged our loyal Corporate & Foundation partners for all their support. Partners included Google.org , El Camino Healthcare District, Applied Materials Foundation, Intuitive Foundation & Intuitive Surgical, Inc., and The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints- Sunnyvale.

When our neighborhood comes together, incredible things happen 🤝 Join us for the North County Resource Fair, a free community event connecting families with local resources, information, and support 🏢✨

Back-to-school prep hit a whole new level this year 📚🎒 Here's a quick recap of SCS's Ready to Learn Magic!

To date, Ready to Learn has served more than 1,800 students with backpacks and school supplies. Throughout August, we will continue providing backpacks and supplies to families connecting with SCS and are partnering with local school districts to ensure they have supplies available for students enrolling throughout the month. We expect to serve more than 2,000 students by the end of the initiative.
