Healing Arts Festival

We hosted a great community event in Ghana as part of a bigger 3 day traditional West African dance & drumming festival. Various troupes represented traditions from throughout the continent & diaspora. Portrayed is The Sankofa Center’s health walk & HIV/AIDS dance-dramas. Traditional West African dance is intertwined with drama that explains to audiences how sexually transmitted disease spreads, the often complex cultural & social realities that put individuals at risk, modes of protection & prevention, and the need for continued compassion & care for friends & loved ones living with HIV.

Disparities in global health mean that while HIV prevention methods-such as PreP- are universally available in developed nations, such is not the case for most in the developing world. In 2026, sexual health education, disease prevention, and access to health care must remain top priorities for the global community.

Artistic expression remains an effective platform for creating space to keep health issues in the forefront of communities.

Bittersweet Reunion:

Papa Atsu has died in Ghana.

89 year old father of one of Sankofa’s original host families has passed away 3 weeks ago. Host to many volunteers & interns it’s a bittersweet reunion with the Tieku family. Years have passed yet the warmth, love, and memories remain. Rest in peace Papa Atsu.

If you’d like to donate towards funeral arrangements held in early August or send the family a note of condolences please see the comment section.

All donations will be given to the family for funeral arrangements.

Digital Storytelling: Meeting of the Minds with Videographer Volunteers

In today’s rapidly interconnected virtual community, we are excited to explore ways videography, visual editing, & digital storytelling can be used to create educational modules that spread awareness & foster thought & communication globally.

Sankofa Center’s director meets with a budding Sacramento filmmaker, brainstorming on ways the digital arts can promote health content creation, program awareness, and tools for empowerment.

Spring is the time of year that brings new beginnings. The weather is warmer, trees & flowers bloom, and outdoor events start to foster community. We look forward to meeting new & familiar faces who learn about Sankofa’s charitable efforts and support through the vibrant textile line. Here’s to another great Spring offering a new chance of connecting.

Sudden death is always a shock and we are saddened by the passing. Traditional dance troupes gather to mourn & dance in remembrance. It is said that one’s spirit moves the casket to and fro as pallbearers carry the body to the burial site. The convergence of various dancers & drummers led to the reunion of so many familiar performers that have worked with Sankofa over the years, some spanning two decade. Tradition Matters.
