National Night Out (NNO) 2026 is coming to a neighborhood near you on Tuesday, August 4! This annual community-building campaign promotes law enforcement-community partnerships and neighborhood camaraderie to strengthen communities and create safer, more secure places to live.

NNO brings neighbors together to build community, make new friends, strengthen connections, and foster positive relationships with public safety personnel. Many neighborhoods celebrate with block parties, barbecues, potlucks, ice cream socials, games, music, contests, and donation drives.

To register your Sunnyvale neighborhood for this event, or for general information, please contact Sunnyvale DPS by email at [email protected] or call 408-730-7140.

The deadline to register is July 14.

REMINDER: If you are planning to block off your street for a neighborhood celebration, you will need to obtain a block party permit from the City of Sunnyvale Fire Prevention Unit by July 14.

To help address abandoned vehicle complaints and improve parking enforcement, the Sunnyvale City Council has adopted updates to the City’s 72-hour parking ordinance.

The existing 72-hour parking limit remains in effect and we will begin enforcing these new requires on July 16, 2026. The new amendments clarify how vehicles must be moved to comply with the law and address public safety concerns related to long-term oversized vehicle parking on public streets.

Key changes:
• Vehicles must move at least 1,000 feet after 72 hours
• Vehicles may not return to the same parking space for at least 24 hours
• Vehicles may not be rented or leased for human habitation on public streets

These updates were informed by a Citywide Parking Study and feedback from residents and businesses regarding abandoned vehicles, sidewalk access, visibility, sanitation, and public safety concerns. Violations may result in citation or vehicle removal at the owner’s expense.

Today, the California K9 Law Enforcement Memorial at UC Davis honored K9 Jax and other four-legged heroes who made the ultimate sacrifice in the line of duty.

Jax gave his life in the line of duty while faithfully serving the Sunnyvale community on October 31, 2017. Each day, we remember and honor his service and sacrifice. He is loved not only by his handler, Officer Eckford, but also by the entire Sunnyvale community.

Jax’s name, along with 26 additional canine names, was added to the “Faithful Partner” statue, which depicts a German Shepherd sitting atop a seven-point law enforcement star. Originally dedicated in 2002, the memorial received its first major update since 2013. The statue is located at the UC Davis School of Veterinary Medicine, a leading care provider for regional police dogs.

Thank you to the UC Davis Police Department and the UC Davis School of Veterinary Medicine for honoring Jax and other K9s who gave their lives in the line of duty.

PG&E will be performing a routine maintenance on their gas pipeline system, which requires a “blowdown.” You may smell gas during this time. Near Pastoria Avenue, especially downwind of the work area, this is expected as residual gas is released from the pipeline.

Planned time: Thursday, June 11 from 5 to 7 p.m.
Location: Almanor Avenue and North Pastoria Avenue

Frequently Asked Questions:
- What is a blowdown? It refers to safely releasing natural gas from a pipeline. Afterwards, PG&E will use air movers for up to 24 hours to clear out any leftover gas from the section they are working on.
- Why are they doing this? Blowdowns are important for preventative maintenance on the gas pipeline. It prevents potential damage and ensures public safety.
- Is this safe? Yes, this is a routine work that PG&E conducts to keep operations running safely.

If you have any questions about the blowdown, please contact 1-800-743-5000. If you smell gas in another area or have safety concerns, call 911.

Yesterday evening, the Sunnyvale Department of Public Safety received a call from a resident reporting that smoke was filling his home and that he and his wife were unable to evacuate because of mobility issues. Patrol officers responded immediately and arrived before fire personnel. After learning from neighbors that the elderly couple was believed to still be inside, officers forced entry into the residence.

The home was filled with smoke, and Public Safety Officers quickly began searching for the couple, locating the residents on the second floor. One resident relied on an oxygen tank, and the other used a wheelchair. Both were safely carried out of the home.

The first-floor kitchen and adjacent walls sustained fire and smoke damage. Fire personnel removed portions of the ceiling and walls to fully extinguish the fire and make sure it had not spread. The fire was successfully extinguished, and the scene was brought under control. It was determined to be accidental and the result of a cooking-related incident.

We are grateful that both residents were unharmed and did not require transportation to the hospital. The quick efforts of responding Patrol Officers were instrumental in ensuring a successful rescue. This incident highlights the unique training of our Public Safety Officers and the strength of a coordinated emergency response the Department of Public Safety is proud of.

Great work by everyone involved, especially to the Patrol Officers who did not hesitate to perform their job at the highest level.
