In November of last year, Twitter had a major scandal. When uploading an image on Twitter, the photo preview would share white people's faces but cut off Black people's faces.¹ Google is another tech company that had a racist scandal. In 2015, people called out Google for having gorillas pop up when you searched for a Black person. This issue didn't get 'fixed' until 2018.²

This problem has also caused an even deeper issue with the already racist healthcare industry. In a study published by Science, they discovered a common racist algorithm among many US hospitals for follow-up checks. ⁴ Their research found that 18% of Black people were given proper care compared to 82% of white people.⁴ The problem with these instances is the developers behind the algorithm and the use of old datasets.³

The pandemic is pushing us into becoming a digital society making it hard for many low-income communities to catch up.¹ Communities like the Black community had a poverty rate of 18.8% in 2019.² The Hispanic community as well had a poverty rate of 15.7% in 2019.² Pew Research also reported that only 56% of Americans earning less than 30k had access to the internet at home compared to those who made between 30k-99k with 81%.³ This digital divide makes it hard to have a virtual education. Unfortunately, the homework gap is affecting millions of students unable to complete their assignments. Approximately 12 million children don't have a home with the internet.⁴

Marginalized communities are facing discrimination with facial recognition. More accurately, the use of this technology in policing. According to the , there is a study that found Amazon's Rekognition's misclassified Black women by 30%.¹ This is the same software that incorrectly paired 28 members of congress with mugshots. These false matches were mostly of people of color.²

The reason for this is the existing data police input into a system. Which is inaccurate.³ More and more people are starting to see from the many unjustified murders last year that law enforcement racially is motivated.⁴

The day the electoral votes were being counted dozens of the Trump mob invaded the Capitol building.¹ Everyone online and through national television was seeing these protestors climb up walls and steal information from offices such as Nancy Pelosi's. Not surprisingly, police who were supposed to be guarding the building were taking pictures with them.²

Now 10 police officers³ including off-duty officers are under investigation.⁴ This behavior from law enforcement was only to be expected. For the last 20 years, white supremacists have filled these roles.⁵ A report made by a former FBI special agent
states that law enforcement has been tied to racist activities in more than 13 states.⁵

Although the event that took place in Capitol Hill is inexcusable and a threat to our Democracy, we will not forget about another monumental moment in history- Georgia flipped blue since 1992. Also, the people in Georgia elected their first Black and Jewish senators Reverend Raphael Warnock and Jon Ossoff.

Their wins may have come as a surprise for many, but it showed that Georgia is changing. According to an article by Vox Black voters showed up more than white voters, tremendously shifting Black communities.¹ A survey made by the Associated Press found that Black voters made up 30% of their voting district.²

We also can't forget about Stacey Abrams and her foundations Fair Fight and the New Georgia Project. She and her team were able to register more the 700,000 voters.³

According to the Center for Disease Control (CDC), five factors put communities of color disproportionately affected by COVID-19. Discrimination, access to healthcare, where we work, wealth gaps and educational gaps, and lastly, housing.¹ We experience discrimination in healthcare, housing, schools, jobs, and finance. Our healthcare access is rooted in racial disparities and a distrust of government. Communities of Color are more likely to work in essential work environments. Our education is less valued leading to less stable jobs furthering the wealth gap. Due to these many factors, our community lives in crowded houses increasing the risk of COVID-19.

Our community is being affected nationwide. We have higher death rates and hospitalizations.² Our death toll is more than 1 out of 750.³

Unfortunately, redlining and other factors that’s left our Black communities poor have a bigger effect on us than we think. Because of these situations we’ve always had low access and quality healthcare.¹ According to Physicians for a National Health Program, nowadays insurance has become too expensive and insurance companies deny coverage to anyone who thinks might cost them a lot of money.²

We have to make a fundamental change, much larger than protesting. We have to vote for our people to help change these racist laws against us!

With Covid, it’s no secret that Black Americans are being affected the most.¹ While a vaccine is finally becoming available 40% of our community has shown a distrust in the treatment.²

Why? Because of many unethical medical experiments that did not treat Black people as humans deserving of protection and quality medical treatment. For example, the Tuskegee Study has affected our community for many years.³

The majority of President-elect Joe Biden’s transition team are over 40 percent people of color¹ and his COVID-19 task force has 5 women out of 13 doctors and public health experts.² But as we know, there is huge negligence in the medical industry with Black communities.³ Let’s dive in on who represents our community, as Biden promised, in his Coronavirus team.⁴

➡️ Dr. Marcella Nunez-Smith
co-chair. Associate professor of internal medicine, public health, and management at Yale University.

➡️ Ms. Loyce Pace
Executive director and president of the Global Health Council.

➡️ Dr. Eric Goosby
Infectious disease expert and founding director of one of the biggest federally funded programs for HIV/AIDS.

Election Day is over and many outlets declare Joe Biden as President-elect and Kamala Harris as the first woman to be Vice President-elect. The reason? More Black voters. The Associated Press reported Black voters made up 11% of the national electorate. Key forces at play with this increase of Black voters were The Movement for Black Lives, voting rights group Fair Fight Action by Stacy Abrams, and Black Voters Matter.¹

However, things in the House of Representatives are rocky. As we know the House has a majority of Democrats, but this election lost 10-15 seats to Republicans.² On a conference call from the House, the centrist blamed progressives for this loss due to the Black Lives Matter movement, Defund the Police, and Green New Deal.³ But progressives like Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez are fighting back saying that Republican attack ads, a lack of digital campaigning, and party organization are the reasons for this decline.²

From what we see, it was centrists who lost their seats in Republican-leaning states, and progressives who already had a seat in the senate were re-elected like Congresswoman Rashida Tlaib.⁴ Plus, states such as Georgia voted blue after nearly 30 years of staying red.⁵

It seems that people want a real change. People want more minority representation and more equality. Hear what we and BINGE have to say about this long time coming social change in our podcast- Why Now? Dissecting the Anatomy of a Revolution, available on Spotify and Apple Music!

We know it’s hard right now. You’re looking at election results every chance you get. You have constant thoughts racing through your head about how many electoral votes are left needed for a candidate to win. But the important thing to remember is a democracy counts every single vote. Please be patient, the results will be worth the wait.
