Ten years ago, Gateway Music Outreach was just an idea.

As we head toward our 10th anniversary in 2027, I keep thinking about the children who walked in holding an instrument for the very first time. More than 90% of our early students had never played before. Today they're performing in our Community Youth Orchestra, training at our Summer String Institute, and learning from St. Louis Symphony musicians.

We're part of a long tradition: the Boys Choir of Harlem, El Sistema in Venezuela, and Harmony Project in Los Angeles. Each one believed the same thing we do. Talent is everywhere, but opportunity has to be built on purpose.

If you haven't seen the documentary Crescendo! The Power of Music, watch it. I've seen it many times and walk away inspired every time. The kids in it struggle, stumble, and keep going, and you watch them become someone new.

That's what we see at Gateway every week. And something else has happened along the way: while our students have been growing, so has Gateway.

Thank you to every family, teacher, mentor, and supporter who has been part of our first decade. The best is still ahead. đź’™
