At tonight's Town Council Worksession, we will be discussing the Marshall Fire Remembrance project.

Together with the Marshall Fire Remembrance Committee, design consultants Davis Partnership and LandDesign have developed an initial concept, which Town Council reviewed in December 2025. The Town has also begun coordination with Boulder County because the proposed site at the Oerman-Roche Trailhead is located on Town-owned open space with a County conservation easement. Boulder County has provided general support for the project, along with some design parameters, which is an important step forward.

The key discussion now is how to fund the project. The Committee is strongly recommending that the project be supported through donations rather than Town tax revenues, which reflects feedback gathered through the community engagement process. Staff is recommending that the Town identify a nonprofit partner to help manage fundraising and donations.

This is the next major step in creating a thoughtful, lasting space where our community can gather, reflect, and honor the people, homes, and memories we lost. I’m grateful to the residents, committee members, staff, and partners who have put so much time into this effort over the past few years.

Construction is officially underway on the final phase of reconstructing Rock Creek Parkway, covering the stretch from Indiana Street to Coalton Road. This is the final piece of a multi-year effort to improve one of Superior’s most important roads.

A little history: remember that Town Community Survey many of you filled out a few years ago? Residents rated Superior good or excellent in most areas — but the lowest-rated category was streets. We heard that loud and clear, and the Town has made major investments in road improvements ever since. Over the past several years, we’ve completed work on McCaslin, Coalton, 88th Street, Indiana, 76th Street, Sycamore, the Sagamore neighborhood, and street sealing and alley paving projects throughout Rock Creek and Original Town.

For Rock Creek Parkway, the Town used public input, traffic analysis, and the Rock Creek Parkway Repurposing Study to develop a plan focused on both road condition and safety. In 2024, the Town completed the upper section from McCaslin Boulevard to Indiana Street. In 2025, we completed improvements to the McCaslin/Rock Creek Parkway intersection, along with rehabilitation of the Purple Park pedestrian bridge and underpass. Now we are finishing the final stretch.

This summer’s work includes removing several right-turn lanes and bollards, narrowing portions of the roadway to improve pedestrian safety, building a new single-lane roundabout at Rock Creek Parkway and Coal Creek Drive, and improving the 88th Street roundabout. The project also includes new pedestrian crossings, updated ADA ramps, protected bike lane improvements, and new pedestrian warning beacons. I know the new roundabout has been controversial and public input was split. Town Council debated the issue and the majority ultimately voted to move forward.

Construction will continue in phases through October 2026. We know road construction is disruptive, and we appreciate everyone’s patience as the work continues. When complete, Rock Creek Parkway will have a better road surface, safer crossings, and improved bike and pedestrian facilities.

Today we celebrated the grand opening of one of Downtown Superior’s newest businesses: 5280 Creative Collective!

This fun new space brings together three sister brands under one roof:

Tot Box 5280, a mini-session photography studio
Wanderbooth 5280, a photo booth rental company
Popped 5280, offering balloon decor for special events

The collective is co-founded by Lyndsey and Vanessa, who are excited to finally open their doors and welcome the community. Be sure to stop by on Main Street, check out their space, and help welcome 5280 Creative Collective to Downtown Superior!
And yes, of course I had to try out the “Tot Box.”

Congratulations to Superior's Historical Commission on receiving the Local History and Preservation Honor Award at the Boulder County Heritage Roundtable’s 34th Annual Archaeology & Historic Preservation Month Awards Ceremony last night.

The award recognizes the Commission’s incredible work rebuilding the Superior Historical Museum at Asti Park after it was lost in the Marshall Fire. This was more than a building project — it was a commitment to preserving Superior’s history, even after one of the most difficult chapters in our community’s story.

A special thank you to the Niwot Historical Society for nominating Superior for this honor, and to the Boulder County Heritage Roundtable for recognizing the importance of this work. The Roundtable brings together organizations and individuals dedicated to historic preservation, including museums, historical societies, Boulder County Open Space, and others. Superior’s Historical Commission is proud to be part of that effort.

The award was presented by Sergeant David Salaman, whose role with Boulder County and service as a Marshall Fire first responder made the moment especially meaningful.

Most of all, thank you to the members of the Superior Historical Commission and everyone who helped bring the museum back to life.

Love seeing our small businesses coming together for a special Downtown Main Street Open House celebration this Saturday!

Stop by to visit Kenn Shui, Arts Off Center, American Family Insurance, and Main Street Longevity. There will be music, snacks, beverages, gift bags, and a chance to explore these unique new businesses and meet the owners behind them.

The weather looks perfect, so bring your bathing suit and let the kids (or yourself) frolic through the Downtown splash pad afterward. :)

I’ll see you there after we cut the ribbon at the new Community Park playground which is also tomorrow at 1pm. It's going to be a Superior weekend.

Much gratitude to Vargas for the ongoing work removing junipers throughout our community, most recently along the medians on Indiana and Coalton.

Junipers are commonly used in landscaping, but are considered a significant fire hazard because of their volatile oils, dry interior material, and low-hanging branches. Removing them is one more important step in reducing fire risk and making our community safer.

To Goat or not to Goat?

Goat grazing is one of Superior’s more unique wildfire mitigation tools we use to reduce dry vegetation in open space areas.

The Town Council recently approved extending our contract with Goat Bros for another season. I had thought that the goats were loved by all residents but recently got an email from a resident requesting we end the program because he “bought a house in a community, not a fricking livestock yard, and I don't fricking want goats decimating our property and crapping everywhere."

So... What say you Superior? To Goat or not to Goat? Let me know your thoughts below and bonus points for any good goat puns.
