Over the past several weeks, the Superior Police Department’s Emergency Response Team (E.R.T.) & the Douglas County’s Emergency Response Unit (E.R.U.) conducted dual agency trainings.

Both teams participated in a two day course taught by Dave Harris of Harris Strategic Solutions, who offered this training at no-cost. This course highlighted many special tactics, emphasizing Hostage Rescue.

On behalf of the Douglas County, WI. Sheriff's Office and the Superior Police Department, we would like to thank Dave & all who participated in this training.

On Thursday, April 16, 2026, at approximately 8:16am, officers responded to Simko Recycling at 1901 N. 6th Street on the report of a gr***de located in a bin that had been dropped off.
The manager advised that the gr***de was placed in an area away from employees near a concrete barrier.

Officers arrived and instructed Simko staff to remain clear of the area. The 148th Airbase Ordinance Disposal Office in Duluth, MN was notified. For jurisdictional reasons, the Marathon County (Wisconsin) Bomb Squad was also contacted.

The Marathon County Bomb Squad took control of the scene and identified the device as a training gr***de often used by the U.S. Military for training purposes. The Marathon County Bomb Squad took custody of the device.

We would like to thank Marathon County and the 148th Airbase Ordinance Disposal Office for their response and assistance. We would also like to thank the management and employees of Simko Recycling for taking the necessary measures to ensure the safety of their employees and customers.
