While our crews continue monitoring and cooling hot spots from last night’s inferno, we were greeted with an incredible surprise! 🍦🚒

Our local heroes from Classic Cones stopped by the fire scene to offer our firefighters cold drinks and delicious ice cream. Their generosity and kindness meant more than words can express after a long night and hard days work.

Thank you, Classic Cones, for thinking of our crew and supporting those who serve our community. Your thoughtful gesture put smiles on our of faces and reminded us that even heroes have heroes!

And who says firefighters can’t enjoy a Classic Cone on the fireground? We’d say it’s well deserved! ❤️🍦

At 21:24 Superior Fire was dispatched to a structure fire on Terrace. As the bay doors opened, the smoke and glow could be seen across town, and immediately SFD requested back up. In town firefighter Chris Villaverde and Chief Perez both responded from home and Queen Valley FD came to help the on duty crew.

At 21:27 the first unit was on scene of a fully engulfed structure with exposures (homes) on both sides. This was a very fast response of only 3 minutes from the Firehouse to the scene of the fire.

Initial actions were to put immediate water where the fire was threatening other homes. A “deck gun” is a large diameter water appliance on top of our fire trucks that allows us to do this. However, the truck when not attached to a hydrant, only holds 1,000 gallons. Water was on the fire within 1 minute of arrival and within 5 minutes of SFD being dispatched.

Quick water application slowed fire spread dramatically and allowed firefighters time to then attach to a hydrant for a constant water supply. Both firefighters, with the help of Superior Police attached two supply lines within 3-4 minutes. This was necessary when the first supply line was not able to keep up with the demand of both a fire hose line and the deck gun. The amount of fire simply required more water. Once the second hydrant was attached to the truck, three hose lines, and the deck gun were used to extinguish the fire.

The structure had multiple levels, including a basement. After it was confirmed that there weren’t any occupants, all fire objectives were carried out defensively from the perimeter. No risk was taken to put firefighters in a position to be above a compromised basement. Because of roof collapse and excessive material in the structure, many smoldering areas with fire underneath debris were not reachable from the perimeter. Due to the areas where smoldering was present, it is anticipated small spot fires inside the structure could ignite. Therefore, Superior Fire started “fire watch”. Throughout the night an SFD firefighter will check on the structure and ensure there isn’t any risk of extension outside the confinement of the structure. During fire watch, small fires or smoldering will be monitored and extinguished as necessary.

Also thank you to the community for allowing us to do our work, the encouraging comments, and the offers of water and even sparkling water. We know it’s entertaining, or interesting to watch these kind of events, we are grateful that you gave us the space to do our job.

Attached is video of us responding in the firetruck. Once close, sirens are turned off so we can hear ourselves. This gives you an idea of what we look for and consider while enroute to an emergency. It also hopefully allows you to see that we must bring the “calm” to an otherwise very intense situation. Our initial thoughts and objectives coming into this scene were to put the deck gun in place to protect the two adjacent homes from starting fire, and to quickly establish a permanent water supply.

Today, we ask you take a brief pause to remember the Granite Mountain Hotshots 19 courageous firefighters who made the ultimate sacrifice on June 30, 2013, while protecting the community of Yarnell, Arizona.

Their unwavering courage, selfless service, and commitment to one another represent the very best of the fire service. Though their watch ended far too soon, their legacy continues to inspire firefighters across our nation every day.

Late last night and into the early morning hours, Superior Fire Department’s B-Shift crew: Captain Lusk, Firefighter Branson, and Firefighter Villaverde,
responded to reports of a single-vehicle rollover near Gonzalez Pass.

Upon arrival, crews found a white Chevrolet Silverado resting on its side with moderate damage and a single occupant trapped inside. The situation presented significant challenges, as the vehicle remained unstable and posed a risk of further movement that could endanger both the patient and responding personnel.

Firefighters quickly secured the vehicle to prevent it from rolling onto its roof before initiating a complex heavy extrication operation. Through coordinated efforts and rapid action, crews successfully removed the patient from the wreckage and transferred them to awaiting medical personnel. The patient was then transported to a Valley hospital for further evaluation and treatment.

While the incident remains under investigation, alcohol is believed to have been a contributing factor. Fortunately, the patient is expected to make a full recovery.

This incident serves as an important reminder of the devastating consequences that can result from impaired driving. Every time someone gets behind the wheel after drinking, they put not only their own life at risk, but also the lives of innocent motorists, passengers, first responders, and members of our community. One decision can be the difference between making it home safely and a tragedy that changes lives forever.

We would like to extend our sincere thanks to our neighboring partners at Queen Valley Fire District and the Arizona Department of Public Safety for their assistance and teamwork throughout the incident.

Today, we pause to remember and honor the brave men and women who made the ultimate sacrifice in service to our country. Their courage, dedication, and selflessness will never be forgotten.

As we spend time with family and friends this Memorial Day, let us also take a moment to reflect on the true meaning of this day and remember those who gave everything for the freedoms we enjoy.

From all of us at the fire department, we extend our deepest gratitude to our fallen heroes and their families. We remember. We honor. We will never forget. 🇺🇸🚒

C-Shift, responded to a small human-caused brush fire near the Los Hermanos and US-60 rest stop wash. Firefighters Cardona and Florez worked quickly to contain and extinguish the fire, and remained on scene to ensure all hot spots were fully cooled before clearing.

This serves as an early reminder to our community — with current dry conditions, even the smallest spark can quickly become a devastating wildfire. We encourage everyone to remain vigilant and do their part to help prevent accidental fires.

Please remember that Stage 1 Fire Restrictions remain in effect within the Tonto National Forest. Your cooperation helps protect our community, our firefighters, and our public lands.

⚠️ Effective today, May 15, Stage 1 Fire Restrictions are now in effect for the Tonto National Forest.

The following activities are prohibited under these restrictions:

1. Building, maintaining, attending, or using a fire, campfire, or stove fire — including charcoal and briquettes — outside of a Forest Service-provided structure within a designated area. (36 C.F.R. § 261.52(a)) 🔥
2. Smoking, except within an enclosed vehicle or building, at a designated recreation site, or while stopped in an area at least three (3) feet in diameter that is barren or cleared of all flammable material. (36 C.F.R. § 261.52(d)) 🚭
3. Discharging a fi***rm, air r***e, or gas gun. (36 C.F.R. § 261.58(m))🔫

These restrictions are put in place to help reduce the risk of wildfire and protect our communities, firefighters, wildlife, and the beauty of our desert landscapes. We appreciate everyone doing their part to stay safe and help protect the forest.

Earlier this morning at approximately 2:40 a.m., crews were dispatched to reports of heavy smoke coming from a residence. Upon arrival, firefighters identified an active fire in the laundry room, with flames contained to a single area.

Crews acted quickly to bring the fire under control, extinguish remaining flames, and address any hot spots. Due to their rapid response, damage to the home was kept to a minimum. The residence was ventilated, and crews confirmed the structure was safe for occupants to re-enter.

We extend our appreciation to our partners at AMR (Florence) for providing move-up coverage and standing by during the incident as well as Queen Valley Fire District for the support. We also thank APS and Southwest Gas for their prompt response and valuable assistance on scene.

This incident serves as an important reminder: if you see something, say something. The quick actions of a neighbor—alerting the homeowners and calling 911—played a critical role in ensuring a positive outcome with minimal damage.

Superior Fire Dept “C” shift was out training today with one of our reserves. Your C Shift crew members are Firefighters Dana and Cardona.

Spring Fire training is essential to help firefighters acclimate to the hotter weather coming.
Every line pulled, ever adapter touched, and every nozzle flowed increases FF familiarity.

Keep up the great work FF Dana and Cardona.
