Thanksgiving Gratitude:

Gavin, a Kindergarten student at Supply Elementary, drew a picture to represent his favorite memory from Thanksgiving in which when his family has his Grandmother over to their house to eat Thanksgiving dinner. Gavin says that spending time with his family is what he is most thankful for. Pictured in his drawing
is his family eating turkey and cranberry sauce.

Gavin is served by Success Coach Drew Jordan at Supply Elementary where he participates in a Social-Emotional Learning Group to foster healthy peer relationships and help develop positive character traits.

We wish Gavin, his Grandmother, and his entire family a Happy Thanksgiving!

QUARANTINE GUIDELINES: BCS Family, we've received some questions regarding quarantine protocols now that the district has switched to face coverings being optional for all students and staff.

BEFORE 11/02/21: When face coverings were required for everyone, quarantine protocols were that only the person with COVID-19 or an individual with symptoms needed to quarantine in most cases because everyone was wearing a mask in classrooms.

AS OF 11/02/21: Now that face coverings are optional and classrooms are a mixture of students with and without masks, that protocol is not always applicable because not everyone is wearing a mask.

πŸ‘‡ Current Contact Tracing Guidance from Brunswick County Health Services is below:

❗️ Close Contact: Someone who was within 6 feet of an infected person for a cumulative total of 15 minutes or more over a 24-hour period starting from 2 days before symptoms began (or, for asymptomatic individuals, 2 days prior to test specimen collection date) until the time the individual is isolated.

Quarantine is required for these individuals except in the following situations:

πŸ‘‰ Individuals who are fully vaccinated and do not have symptoms do NOT need to quarantine after a close contact. Individual should get tested 3-5 days after exposure and wear a mask around others until receiving a negative test result. Vaccinated contacts will need to mask for the full 14 days around others.
πŸ‘‰ People who have tested positive for COVID-19 within the past 3 months and recovered and do not have symptoms do NOT have to quarantine.
πŸ‘‰ Individuals who are not fully vaccinated after a close contact in a classroom or other school setting if masks were being worn appropriately and consistently by both the person with COVID-19 and the potentially exposed person do NOT need to quarantine. This is based on updated studies that have shown low risk of COVID-19 transmission in classroom settings when face masks were being used appropriately by both the person with COVID-19 and the potentially exposed person, as well as multiple layers of prevention measures in place to prevent transmission in school settings. This applies to exposures in classrooms, other in-school settings, and school transportation but does not apply to exposures during extracurricular, including athletic activities.

❗️ Quarantine: Used to separate exposed close contacts from other individuals to prevent further transmission.
❗️ Quarantine Period: CDC recommends individuals quarantine for 14 days from their last date of exposure to a positive case.

However, there are options to reduce the quarantine period for asymptomatic individuals:

πŸ‘‰ 10 days from last date of exposure (may return on the 11th day)
πŸ‘‰ 7 days from last date of exposure with a negative test obtained no earlier than day 5 from last day of exposure (may return on the 8th day) Test must be either a PCR/antigen tests from a provider or laboratory. Home test can not be used to return from quarantine earlier.
πŸ‘‰ In order for the two options to be utilized, the individual must wear a mask until the full 14-day period is complete, including sports activities. If an individual is unable to wear a mask due to a medical exception, then they must continue to do the full 14 days of quarantine.

IMPORTANT ANNOUNCEMENTS: BCS Family, please see the Face Covering update and School Calendar update below...

πŸ‘‰ FACE COVERINGS: During the 11/02/21 Board of Education Meeting, School Board Members voted to change the Face Covering Protocols to optional for all students and staff, effective immediately inside school buildings.
Per CDC guidelines, Masks are still required on school buses. Additionally, should the positivity rate at any given school reach 10%, the mask requirement would go back into effect at that individual school.

πŸ‘‰ SCHOOL CALENDAR CHANGE: During the 11/02/21 Board of Education Meeting, Board Members approved making November 12th a Day of Reflection and Wellness. It is now designated as a non-required workday for staff. Schools will be closed to students on November 12.

We hope this is helpful to our staff and students who have been really stepping up as we move through this challenging year together.

Thank you for your support of Brunswick County Schools.
