Yesterday evening, at approximately 1756 hours, Station 49 was dispatched to the North 6th Street Beach in Surf City for a report of two swimmers in distress.

Water Rescue Truck 4906 and Jet Ski 4916 responded, along with UTV 4927, Ambulance 496, the Ocean County Sheriff’s Drone Unit, and additional personnel from Station 13 & Harvey Cedars Beach Patrol after-hours coverage.

Upon arrival, 4906 confirmed the initial report of two swimmers caught in a rip current approximately 100 yards offshore and established command.

The Ocean County Sheriff’s Drone Unit deployed a rescue buoy via drone to one victim, while other personnel on scene entered the water with buoys and a rescue board. They made contact with the victims and provided flotation.

Simultaneously, Jet Ski 4916 was launched with two members of our Water Rescue Team, who safely brought the victims ashore, where they were evaluated by EMTs from Surf City Fire & EMS.

We urge all members of the community to stay out of the ocean while lifeguards are off duty. The ocean may appear calm, but strong rip currents persist as we continue through Hurricane Season.
