National Police Week

In 1962, President Kennedy proclaimed May 15 as National Peace Officers Memorial Day and the calendar week in which May 15 falls, as National Police Week.

Today, Sunday May 10, 2026 is the beginning of National Police Week. On behalf of our team at the Oconto County Sheriff’s Office, we honor and remember all of the law enforcement officers who have paid the ultimate sacrifice. If you could please take a moment to reflect, remember and pray for those who have given their lives in the line of duty as the ultimate sacrifice, in service to their citizens all across our great nation. We are forever grateful to them.

This week is also a time where we recognize our Oconto County Deputies as well as our teammates serving with the Oconto, Oconto Falls, Gillett, Lena, and Suring Police Departments, the Wisconsin State Patrol and the Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources who do their absolute best to keep our community safe.

I am grateful and proud to serve alongside our team of law enforcement professionals.

I was honored to be able to attend and participate in the National Day of Prayer at Veterans Park in the Village of Suring. Prayers for my teammates, their families and the people we serve in our community were heartfelt. Sincere appreciation for all of your unrelenting support!

Good evening OC,

On May 05, 1984 President Ronald Reagan established National Correctional Officers week. He saw the need to create a week for correctional officers to thank them for their service and celebrate their contributions to the communities they serve. This week, May 3rd through May 9th is National Correctional Officers Week.

Our Corrections team works hard 24/7/365 behind the scenes making sure our jail functions at a very high level. Our jail programs offer our inmates the opportunity to learn, grow and address underlying issues in an effort to help them better their lives.

Most recently, working in cooperation with the Opioid Ad Hoc Group, we have introduced a new “Changing Course”female counseling program which mirrors our male course which has been around for a while now. This program, along with our new medical aided treatment program are designed to help inmates fighting addiction. Our correctional team is engaged and assists us every step of the way.

I talk a lot about striving to be the best. Well, that’s exactly what you have now. Our team is second to none! Wonderful teamwork all the way around.

We sincerely appreciate their dedication and thank them for all they do for our team and community!

We respond to help our law enforcement partners providing mutual aid anyplace, anytime. In this instance, Deputy Kasten responded with K9 Rena to assist Marinette County with a canine deployment. A search of the vehicle after a positive canine alert netted 32.4 grams of fentanyl. This is a significant amount of a deadly drug off the street. The relationship between our teams is strong!
