Kinship caregivers & foster families: Did You Know?
DDD certification and licensing options can be confusing, but if you’re a foster or kinship family caring for a child with developmental disabilities (or a child who may qualify), this information may be helpful!
1. You May Be Able to Add a DDD Certificate to Your Existing Foster Home License
If you’re currently licensed as a Family Foster Home (FFH) and are caring for a child who is DDD eligible and receiving DDD case management (ALTCS eligibility is not required), you may be able to add a DDD certificate to your existing license.
This allows you to:
✅ Receive DDD reimbursement for your DDD-certified child.
✅ Continue receiving the regular foster care reimbursement for children in your home who are not DDD eligible.
One thing to keep in mind is that adding a DDD certificate to an existing FFH license limits your licensed bed count to the children currently placed in your home. Because of this, some families choose to transition to a Child Developmental Home (CDH) after six months, which allows for additional bed capacity but also comes with additional DDD requirements and oversight.
2. New Information for Kinship Families Licensed Through KSS
I’ve recently received updated guidance regarding KSS kinship licenses.
Families who obtained their kinship license through the KSS process may now be eligible to obtain a DDD certificate. Before moving forward, however, you will need to contact us to help coordinate with your licensing agency.
Families licensed through the traditional FAS process continue to follow the standard DDD certification process.
Because these policies continue to evolve, I will be posting periodically on all known foster care FB pages to help families with any questions and guidance. I also recommend speaking with your licensing agency if you’re interested in adding a DDD certificate to your KSS license so they can request the appropriate approvals.
