🚫 Just because it fits in the recycle can doesn't mean it belongs there!

Some of the most common items we find in recycling that can't be recycled curbside include:

🛍️ Plastic grocery bags
🗑️ Recyclables placed inside a plastic bag
🪢 Garden hoses and extension cords
📦 Styrofoam (foam cups, takeout containers, and packaging)
🍃 Yard waste like grass, leaves, and branches

These items can jam sorting equipment, contaminate loads of recyclables, and slow down the recycling process.

🎆 Don't Do It, Donnie – Fireworks Edition! 🎆

Donnie thought he could toss his used fireworks straight into the trash can... 🚫💥

Don't do it, Donnie!

Every Fourth of July, trash cans catch fire because fireworks weren't disposed of properly. Even if a firework looks like it's finished, it can still contain hot material that may reignite.

✅ The safe way to dispose of fireworks:

Soak all used fireworks in a bucket of water overnight.
Once they're completely soaked, place them in your black trash can.

This extra step can help prevent a dangerous fire.

❌ Don't throw wet paint containers in your trash or recycle can!

Wet paint can create safety and environmental issues when it ends up in collection vehicles or disposal facilities.

✅ If the paint is completely dried into a solid, you can place it in your black trash can.

To dry out paint:
• Leave the lid off in a well-ventilated area
• Wait until the paint is fully solidified
• Mixing in cat litter, sawdust, or a paint hardener can speed up the process.

If you have paint that is still liquid and can't be dried out, schedule a Household Hazardous Waste (HHW) pickup for proper disposal.

🎨 Don’t Do It, Donnie – Paint Edition! 🎨

Donnie thought tossing leftover paint into the trash can was no big deal… until the Recycle Referees showed up. 🚫

Liquid paint should never be thrown into the trash or recycling can. Improperly disposed paint can leak out of carts, damage streets, clog storm drains, and harm the environment.

✅ Here’s the right way to dispose of paint:
• Let leftover paint dry out completely until it’s solid, then place it in your black trash can
OR
• Schedule a household hazardous waste pickup for safe disposal

Residents can bring up to three banker boxes (15x12x10 in.) of paper for secure off-site shredding. City staff will oversee lockable bins for easy and safe drop-off.

City of Surprise administrative offices will be closed on Monday, May 25, in observance of Memorial Day.

🗑️ Trash Collection - City of Surprise trash customers ONLY: There will be no service on Monday, May 25. Collection will resume on Tuesday, May 26.

📚 Libraries - All three City of Surprise libraries will have modified hours on May 25.

🏊 Parks & Recreation - Programming will be held at City locations. City pools will have modified hours. Surprise Tennis & Racquet Center will be closed.
