Bacon's Castle Preservation Virginia acquired Bacon’s Castle in 1974 and after extensive research and restoration, opened the house to the public in 1983.

Built in 1665, Bacon’s Castle is the oldest, standing brick dwelling in the United States and was originally home to prosperous merchant and planter, Arthur Allen. In 1676, Allen was driven from his home by followers of Nathaniel Bacon,

whose uprising later came to be known as Bacon’s Rebellion, for which Bacon’s Castle is now known. The site is open from March to December.

In one week, join us at Bacon's Castle for “Women’s Perspectives on Bacon’s Rebellion”, the second event in the Reconsidering Bacon's Rebellion at 350 Years series!

On May 13th at 6PM guests will enjoy a panel of expert historians and archaeologists as they discuss how women participated in, and were affected by, Bacon’s Rebellion 350 years ago. Bacon’s Castle will also be open before and after the lecture for an open house style tour with featured stops with our panel experts.
