Welcome to the page of the Village of Sussex Fire Department. The Sussex Fire Department members are full-time, part-time, and paid-on-call.

The Sussex Fire Department has a proud history of providing emergency response services to the community since 1922. The organization is made up of employees who have undergone training that enables them to provide professional quality services in a cost-effective manner. Our members enjoy a high level of camaraderie and fellowship that few organizations can match. While we develop a high level of

proficiency through our training and operations, we also make time for social functions that include the entire family. The Department goals are to minimize the risk of death, injury and/or property loss from fire, medical emergency or disaster. In addition to providing a coordinated and timely response to emergencies, the Department attempts to enhance public safety through preventative activities and public education programs.

🔥 Monday Fire Prevention Tip: Grill Safely!

Before you fire up the grill, take a few minutes to make sure you’re doing it safely.

🔥 Keep your grill outdoors and at least 10 feet away from your home, deck railings, and anything that can burn.

🧽 Keep the grill clean and remove grease buildup to help prevent flare-ups.

⛽ If you’re using propane, check the tank and hoses for leaks or damage before each use.

👨‍👩‍👧‍👦 Keep children and pets at least 3 feet away from the grill.

🧯 Keep a fire extinguisher or other appropriate fire-safety equipment nearby and know how to use it.

A little preparation can prevent a grill fire from ruining your summer.

🔥 Monday Fire Prevention Tip: Cook With Care

🍳 Cooking is one of the leading causes of home fires—and a few simple habits can help keep your kitchen safe.

When you’re cooking:

✅ Stay in the kitchen and keep an eye on what you’re cooking.
✅ Keep anything that can burn away from the stovetop.
✅ Turn pot and pan handles inward.
✅ Use a timer so you don’t forget what’s cooking.
✅ Keep a lid nearby when cooking with oil or grease.

🔥 If you have a grease fire:
STOP. DON’T MOVE THE PAN. Turn off the heat if it is safe to do so, carefully slide a lid over the pan, and leave it covered until completely cool.

🚫 NEVER use water on a grease fire.

A moment of attention can prevent a lifetime of regret.
