☀️ HEAT ADVISORY & ELEVATED FIRE WEATHER CONDITIONS – PLEASE PREPARE

The National Weather Service has issued a Heat Advisory for the Sutherlin area from 11:00 AM Tuesday, August 4, through 11:00 PM Wednesday, August 5.

🌡️ Expected Conditions:
• Daytime highs between 96° and 99°F
• Overnight lows only cooling to 60°–65°F

With several days of hot temperatures, remember to:
💧 Drink plenty of water.
🏠 Stay in air-conditioned buildings whenever possible.
☀️ Limit time in direct sunlight, especially during the hottest part of the day.
❤️ Check on elderly relatives, neighbors, and anyone who may be more vulnerable to the heat.
🐾 Don't forget your pets—they need shade and fresh water too.

🚩 RED FLAG WARNING
A Red Flag Warning has also been issued for Wednesday, August 5, from 2:00 PM to 9:00 PM.

Expected fire weather conditions include:
• Relative humidity between 10–15%
• Winds 10–15 mph with gusts up to 25 mph
• Continued drift smoke moving into our area

Warnings change with conditions, so remain informed by following official sources. At the time of this post, there are NO active wildfires threatening the Sutherlin area. However, these weather conditions can allow new fires to start and spread rapidly. This is a serious combination of heat, dry fuels, and wind that has the potential to create challenging conditions across our region.

Now is the time to prepare—not when a fire starts.

✅ Following Public Use Restrictions, remove dry vegetation and other combustible materials from around your home.
✅ Have an evacuation plan and know multiple ways out of your neighborhood.
✅ Prepare a "go bag" with medications, important documents, and essential supplies.
✅ Make sure your family knows how to receive emergency notifications.

📱 Follow the Douglas County Sheriff's Office, Douglas Forest Protective Association, Sutherlin Police Department, City of Sutherlin, Oregon, and the US National Weather Service Medford Oregon for official information.

⚡ We also encourage everyone to follow their electric utility for updates regarding any potential Public Safety Power Shutoffs (PSPS) if conditions worsen.

Sutherlin Fire Department will continue to monitor conditions closely and provide updates as possible. Staying informed, preparing early, and looking out for one another are the best ways to help keep our community safe.

Through the Oregon Conflagration Act, Sutherlin Fire Department has deployed our Type-3 Wildland Engine as part of the Douglas County Task Force to the Brewer Fire near Prineville, Oregon. The Oregon Conflagration Act allows the Oregon State Fire Marshal to deploy additional firefighting resources for fires that pose a serious risk to life, safety, and property and that has exceeded local firefighting capabilities. Sutherlin Fire Department remains staffed and ready to respond to local emergencies.

🎇 Fireworks can turn a celebration into an emergency in seconds.

Every year, thousands of people are injured by fireworks, with burns to the hands, face, and eyes being the most common injuries. Many of these injuries happen to children and bystanders, not just the person lighting the firework.

If you choose to use legal fireworks:
🧨 Never allow young children to handle or light fireworks.
👀 Keep a safe distance from anyone lighting fireworks.
💧 Keep a bucket of water and a hose nearby.
🚫 Never relight a firework that doesn't ignite.
🗑️ Soak used fireworks completely before throwing them away.

Let's make this 250th Independence Day memorable for the right reasons. Celebrate safely, protect your family, and help keep our community out of the emergency room.
