We would like to pass this information along to all the residents of the Town of Sutton and anyone else who follows our page.
Even though we have had a significant snow fall this winter season, as you can see from the map below we are in the Critical Drought portion of the State. It may seem like the ground is wet enough but that may not be the case everywhere. With the nice weather lately and the snow pack melting, if not completely melted, the surface will start to dry out. When this happens fires can spread quickly.
We generally like to have residents do their open burning while there is snow on the ground as this is a great barrier to slow if not not prevent the spread of fire. But with the large amounts of snow we had over the two big storms most piles were probably buried and not able to be burned at an earlier time.
The State updates us daily on whether or not it's acceptable to allow open burning and we get weekly updates on the drought conditions in the State. With that being said, if the current conditions stay the course and we do not see any significant rainfall over the next couple of months, the Open Burning Season may be cut short. Please remember that we have no control over the season, if the State decides that the season is over early, ALL Open Burning will be ceased. Likewise, we do not see any possibility that the season will be extended beyond the May 1st end date.
The Sutton Fire Department urges those of you that have purchased Open Burning permits to try and get all your burning of yard debris done sooner than later to avoid possibly being cut-off. Remember that when allowed Open Burning is from the hours or 10AM to 4PM and you are not able to activate your permit until 9AM on days that it is permitted.

If you need a permit go the the Town web site: WWW.SuttonMA.org/Fire-Department once there you will see two separate links, one to purchase a permit, which you only need to do once for the season, and the other to activate after 9AM. If burning is not allowed on any given day the activation link will not let you activate your permit.

Wednesday morning just before 11:00 AM we were requested by Millbury Fire to respond direct to the scene for the working fire at the Shops at Blackstone Valley. They were responding for reports of smoke from the roof and fire at the back of the building near PetSmart, Michael's and Ulta Beauty. Car 1, Car 2, Car 5, Special Ops 1, Engine 1 and Ladder 3 all responded. It appears to have been an electrical issue where the feed to the building enters. National Grid was called and power was cut to the Mall until the buildings could be isolated and power de-energized for the effected tenants. Once power was de-energized the fire was able to be fully extinguished. It had spread from the exterior junction box to an interior junction box that feeds the panels inside.
A heavy smoke condition was in the stores and ventilation was required to clear the buildings. Several fans were set up to accomplish the job.
Millbury was on scene a while longer but all Sutton Fire units cleared and were back in service in Town shortly before 1:00 PM.
We are always happy to help our neighboring Towns when they need it. Sutton Fire is always on the ready!

The Sutton Fire Department would like to congratulate Lt. Michael Holm on his graduation from the Mass Fire Academy Career Recruit Class 335 today. He worked extremely hard to accomplish this as it is a very rigorous training both physically and academicly. The Department is very proud of his accomplishments over these past 10 weeks.

Mike, job well done!

Chief Belsito would also like to extend a big thank you to Grafton Fire, Chief Mathieu and the members of Grafton E3 for covering our Town today so that members of the Department could attend the Graduation Ceremony.
