We can - and should - do better. Thankfully, most people who enjoy our beaches already do!

But when groups intentionally leave this amount of trash behind, it’s important to remind the public that littering is not only disrespectful to our community and environment, it is also a violation of Massachusetts law and can, and should, result in fines.

Yesterday, Swampscott officials attended MassRecycle's Annual Conference & Trade Show in Boxboro to connect with recycling professionals, representatives from municipalities, and vendors from across the state.

Representing Swampscott were Wayne Spritz, Chair of the Solid Waste Advisory Committee and Vice-Chair Emily Westhoven; Board of Health member Helen Tieger; and Mark Noonan, Assistant Engineer at DPW.

The conference offered important and valuable opportunities to network, ask questions, share ideas, and learn about the latest trends, developments, opportunities, and challenges in the recycling industry, and how they impact municipalities like ours.

Key topics discussed, among others, were operational excellence guidelines for municipalities, expanding access to recycling in multifamily housing, reuse and event recycling strategies, and an update on advancing Extended Producer Responsibility (EPR) initiatives in Massachusetts.
