This past Friday, Firefighters Brittany Coppinger and Michael Salsgiver visited the 1st graders at the new elementary school to talk about fire prevention. Students learned about the job of a firefighter, what they should do in case of an emergency at their own homes, and even got to see Firefighter Salsgiver put on all of his gear!

Fun fact- did you know that gear weighs about 60 pounds?!

Today we had the unique pleasure of meeting back up with a gentleman named Tom who was saved this summer thanks to the valiant efforts of a Good Samaritan, the Swampscott Police Department and our very own Swampscott Fire Department. Today there was a press conference held with Tom, his family, the Good Samaritan and Swampscott’s first responders to honor the heroic efforts and teamwork of all involved.

Earlier this summer, Tom was found unresponsive outside the Swampscott Post Office. Good Samaritan, Kate Sheetz, immediately began to administer CPR. 911 was called and shortly after, Swampscott Police took over compressions. Upon their arrival, the Swampscott Firefighters took over compressions from police and administered the life saving AED to restart Tom’s heart. A special thank you to Swampscott Police Department members- Officer Kenyon, Officer Caruso and Sgt. Luck as well as Swampscott Fire Department members- Lt. Justin Ramstine, Lt. Michael Salsgiver and FF Ariana Sarro. Bravo to all involved for your lifesaving efforts!
